I've been seeing a lot of posts on social media saying not to donate to them. Instead, you should donate to local organizations.

What does the OT think?

Red Cross is like the IRS. They just want your money.

This is accurate. A lot more of their money goes direct to the source.

You should always donate local if you can. Red Cross just seems like your wasting your money

The Red Cross really dropped the ball in the Louisiana flooding last year. If you do donate, make sure it goes specifically to Harvey disaster recovery and not just their general fund. I'd rather donate to the Salvation Army or something local.

Red Cross has been a bit exposed lately. Their donation percentages are low because of large administrative overhead and costs. They didn't do so hot in BR during and after the floods either.

I can't complain. They paid for my hotel after Katrina. Unsolicited too...the front desk called and let me know they took care of it.

Once the Red Cross took over a shelter, the only food allowed in that shelter was from approved vendors.

Several friends that flooded are more willing to sell their souls before giving a penny to the Red Cross, each for different reasons.

Yeah, I had a great-uncle who was a Marine on Iwo Jima. Until the day he died he held a grudge against the Red Cross because they SOLD donuts & coffee to returning servicemen, while the USO provided them at no cost.

I never had dealings w/ the Red Cross as a serviceman myself, but I can definitely vouch for the USO. It's legit.

Yes. They have inordinately high "costs", meaning their executives pay themselves well. Meanwhile they were serving flood victims here in Baton Rouge four chicken nuggets as a "meal", all while turning down donations from local people in favor of distributing crap they were buying from their "partners".

frick the Red Cross.

Feeding people does not cost much and it is a feel good thing that people can see, the Red Cross is notorious for that type of thing. They will raise money after a disaster and only a small percentage of the money is applied to that disaster, they justify it by claiming they provided as much money as was needed and need the surplus funding available for future disasters so they can respond immediately.
