The International Red Cross is really bad. Like IOC bad
American Red Cross is marginally better

Like most entities that are first on the seen of major catastrophes, things don't run smoothly right away. Often their own local volunteers are impacted by what has hit the community so they are sending in outside volunteer and relying on delivery of supplies to impacted areas that creates more issues.
I've toured their local facility and it is impressive. 1 of 4 facilities the Kuwaiti government donated to the U.S. gulf coast after we liberated them from
Sadam Hussein.
They are tasked with all the big issues. They aren't very adaptive and their staff often seem like they "don't have a heart", but that may be somewhat necessary at times to move and care for the masses. Batch processing may be necessary I guess.
I can see some truth in the criticisms I see. I also am not sure you could handle the varied nature of he things they respond to any better in a mass response manner. The local charities are a necessary fill in for the gaps in Red Cross coverage.

I'll never donate to them after their antics in BR last year. Caught throwing away clothing donations and food donations that people were bringing to the shelters. Because they weren't "approved". They were throwing away world class home cooked food to serve the refuses a few chicken nuggets. Those shelters would've done better without RC.

They aren't all the way bad. 50 cents of every dollar you donate, might find it ways to victims.
But they are a long way from being good. They pay their employees an extra percentage of donations during emergencies.

Had a WW2 vet who fought in the pacific tell me the same thing.

I have no experience, but if some organization is providing food, wouldn't they want to know where it came from? Same with supplies. I am sure negative press would haunt any one that gave disaster victims and first responders food poisoning.

I will never donate to the Red Cross ever again. They failed miserably during the flood last year. Just ask anyone in Ascension Parish.

As opposed to the universal negative press you can see they generate all on their own?
These are people they "helped" shitting all over them.
Again, frick the Red Cross. It exists to make itself money, not to help.

I know that I went to the shelters at Celtic to volunteer my time last year and they tried to make me jump thru all sorts of hoops just to help out. Tried to make me take a bunch of time-consuming online classes. I called their bluff, told them this was bullshite, that I'd go help somewhere else that was less picky. I started to walk out and they changed their tune real quick, slapped a "volunteer" sticker on me and sent me off to the kitchen to help deliver meals to the elderly & infirm.

When a tornado hit my dads house the salvation army was there in about 6hours, stopped by twice a day. Red Cross showed up about 5 days later

They are a good organization, but large part of their donations and assets never make it to those in needs. Where as the Salvation Army's CEO makes 13,000 a year just think about that. I think it is better to donate local but that is just me.

They sucked balls in Iraq...

This is accurate. A lot more of their money goes direct to the source.

Yes, Most of the money donated goes to employees and does not get to the needy.

This is why I have a problem with the Red Cross, especially when they solicit donations and are "nonprofit"

I've seen the good and the not so good from them. I would prefer to use a local organization if possible.

Like any entity that deals with crises, the Red Cross draws their share of criticism....mostly from people sitting on their asses at home posting shite on facebook.
I deal with this type of crisis from time to time and generally see the Red Cross do a damn fine job. Sure, they source supplies from larger, non-local companies...that is the only way to ensure a reliable supply in that kind of situation.
Generally, the folks who get their Jimmies rustled are local folks hoping to step in and do some scalping of supplies to make a quick buck. When the red cross has stuff brought in from a state or so away, of course the local "Boss Hog" types are gonna get pissed.

Charity Navigator - Red Cross - 91% of funds raised go to programs, services and aid.
That's not too bad. In fact, that's really good.
Salvation Army hides behind it's religious affiliation and does not report what percentage goes to programs and what goes to administrative and other hard costs.
