This is why I have a problem with the Red Cross, especially when they solicit donations and are "nonprofit"

You obviously didn't realize these are the going rates for executive leadership at annually multi-billion dollar organizations. Surprised the top leadership doesn't make more, actually.

They are very inefficient with the money people give them.

Scale and scope of responsibility. It takes qualified people to run this scope of operation.

quote:

The relationship between the American Red Cross and the federal government is unique. We are an independent entity that is organized and exists as a nonprofit, tax-exempt, charitable institution pursuant to a charter granted to us by the United States Congress.

Unlike other congressionally chartered organizations, the Red Cross maintains a special relationship with the federal government. We have the legal status of “a federal instrumentality,” due to our charter requirements to carry out responsibilities delegated to us by the federal government.

Among these responsibilities are:

to fulfill the provisions of the Geneva Conventions, to which the United States is a signatory,

assigned to national societies for the protection of victims of conflict, to provide family communications and other forms of support to the U.S. military,

and to maintain a system of domestic and international disaster relief, including mandated responsibilities under the National Response Framework coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Despite this close relationship with the federal government, the American Red Cross is not a federal agency, nor do we receive federal funding on a regular basis to carry out our services and programs. We receive our financial support from voluntary public contributions and from cost-recovery charges for some of our services, such as the provision of blood and blood products and health and safety training courses. Under limited circumstances, however, it sometimes becomes necessary for us to seek appropriations for certain programs when the funding requirements are beyond that supported by the charitable public. At times, federal and state government agencies also contract with the Red Cross and provide material aid and assistance to support the Red Cross in fulfillment of specific instances of our charter obligations.

I have no experience, but if some organization is providing food, wouldn't they want to know where it came from? Same with supplies. I am sure negative press would haunt any one that gave disaster victims and first responders food poisoning.

They were trashing cases of chips & other wrapped food at Celtic studios

IIRC they also called OSHA on a local church housing people because the pastor wouldn't let them take over

not sure, but they were the first people into new orleans feeding first responders a day or 2 after Katrina

And by the time that person gets a plate of food, it costs about $50 per plate in administrative costs alone. They are on par with the FedGov when it comes to wasteful spending. Donate to a church where close to 90% of your donation actually gets to the people that need it instead of 10% with the red cross

My father was WWII in the Pacific and he hated them. He loved the Salvation Army because twice while training in the states they picked him up hitchhiking and one time the Red Cross truck drove past him. Old man stayed pissed about that for 70 more years.

My dad was the same, WWII Navy vet, cursed the Red Cross his entire life.

Once the Red Cross took over a shelter, the only food allowed in that shelter was from approved vendors.

And that's exactly the way it would be if I were running things. Otherwise if someone donates something spoiled then I'm getting sued for having inadequate control.

Red Cross pools money to be used at their discretion. So your dollars donated to flood relief might be buying water for a BLM rally. They are also one of the worst as ratio of dollars donated to the actual dollars spent on relief.

I donated to local churches. There's a preacher up the road from my house that put together a Penske truck worth of supplies. As the water was coming up in our subdivision, they were trying to get the truck out so the supplies could be delivered. That's pretty awesome and selfless.

When I found out they were using their funds to show up to the Jena 6 protest a few years back to provide free water and meals to the protesters, I realized they weren't a disaster/emergency response aid organization.

They have the resources and assets to set up quickly and deliver meals and limited services quickly after a disaster.. they fail miserably after the initial crisis as they are akin to a bloated government agency with restrictive red tape.

Salvation Army >>> Red Cross

Definitely, their food trucks were still cruising my neighborhood after Katrina until Spring the following year providing a good, free dinner if you wanted it. After busting your arse all day, every day, it was a nice treat not to have to worry about cooking in the evening.

I forgot about the Jena 6. Saw on the news a couple of years ago that one of them got a full ride to law school paid for by Gates Foundation. I think another one tried to commit suicide.

Louisiana Baptist Convention Disaster Relief has several mobile kitchens that can prepare 10 to 20 thousand meals per day. Other state conventions have same thing. A very high percentage of donations get to the people that need it. That is what we started donating to after Katrina/Rita. Southern Baptists prepare more meals than any other organization during disaster relief.

Just give to catholic charities. They will get the money where it needs to go.

If you want to make a difference, find a way to give directly to a family in need. Reaching out to local churches are your best bet.
