Yes.
My best friend who is big into racing changes his oil in his street cars every 10,000 miles. Says he could go longer than that with no issues, it's true. Changing your oil soon is just all marketing. $$$$

I do mine every 8-10k.

I don't need a friend to do that. I can do it myself.

I am a mechanic and have been for 33 yrs.First, let me say: I could not care less when you change your oil as I don't change oil. Most mechacics don't change oil. That's for oil changers and poor do-it-yourselfers. (cue the "I do it 'cause they'll frick it up at the oil change place" crowd.)

What's wrong with changing your own oil? I think it's something every man should, at least, know how to do.

You assume that all do it yourself people are poor, and you have the audacity to call someone else an idiot?

Which ones aren't and why??

While synthetics are engineered to use less viscosity modifier additives, they still use others like detergents, friction modifiers (in weights below 10W-40), corrosion and rust inhibitors, antioxidants, extreme pressure agents, dispersants, anti-foam agent, etc.

As another example, a motorcycle specific oil will have some different additives (boron being a main one, if my memory serves me correctly) than a general automotive oil that help it fight the sheer effect of the clutch/transmissions.

This is still going? Surprising.

There are tons of factors to consider about which oil and how often to change it. To determine what is best for you is do this:

That is what I said. All multi-vis oils that I am aware of uses VIs. Synthetics use less. I haven't addressed all the other additives. That gets pretty deep.

You are a mechanic. You proved that very quickly. We have a 5.0 liter on the stand that we just rebuilt with a few added go fast goodies. Since I'm not really poor I will have to take it to an oil changer mechanic to fill with oil before we put it in the car. .... can we at least put our own oil filter on???

I didn't.

Brian Harris charges a flat $250/change. My poor arse gets a pavlovian reaction every time I hear the word oil.

Not reading this entire thread, but here's what I know.

Synthetic oil in a crankcase is a waste. Conventional oil goes bad because of combustion blowby, not because it breaks down. Being synthetic doesn't protect the oil from blowby and it loads up just as quickly and needs to be changed at the same intervals.

Synthetic oil does pay off in dividends in places like transmissions and differentials where the main factor in deterioration is thermal breakdown and age rather than contaminate loading.

Which reminds me I need to order some redline Mt-90 for the ole AX-15.

I just follow the manual for engine oil.
