I have one of these in my backyard and get the same feeling.

It’s gorgeous outside. I think it’s getting lit tonight. Thank you for this thread.

Back when I was living a life of cyclical debt I had a badass back porch with a full on fireplace. I sold all that shite two years ago and bought a small fixer upper. I've just added a deck and lean to with fence board siding, so not a high dollar thing. I did, however, go all out on the fireplace again. Found an insert on FB marketplace, built a mantle and hearth.

Years ago we had a mardi gras party and it was abnormally warm, like mid 80s. We still pulled out the fire drums. One guy said "if you build it, they will come". And they did.

My theory is we are incredibly conditioned to do this, as we have spent thousands of years around a fire for warmth before modern conveniences.

Historically speaking, man may have spent more time staring at a fire than any other activity.

I have a similar theory about the impact of water on us. Beach side, lake side, by a river, whatever...it makes us feel content and happy, I think because for eons water meant life for early humans. So we're pre-programmed to feel more content when we're near it.

Plants take in energy from the sun and use it to covert carbon in the air to mass within themselves. We then take that same plant and burn the mass and release the carbon and energy. In a sense, the flame you see from the campfire is part of the same flame that came off the sun and helped the plant grow.

I don't think that's totally correct or incorrect, but stare at a campfire while on mushrooms and you may come to the same conclusion I did.

before the internet we always had one during hunting season with an old radio playing the LSU games in the background while the bullshite and drinks flowed.

It’s definitely one of the highlights of any camping trip or random outdoor experience. I really want to learn primitive fire making that seems like it would be satisfying.

Early morning coffee

I've got a little Stanley french press to make coffee while camping. Last time we went, I texted my wife pics of our breakfast set up. She didn't mention the bacon or eggs in her reply, or the fire, or the boy and dog enjoying everything. Nope, she said that coffee looks good, wish I had some. Mind you she was at home with the coffee pot and could walk to the kitchen and brew a pot. She'd rather have someone else make it.

Better than staring at an ocean for hours. Both are like a TV whose channel never changes.

It’s amazing as is stating out at the ocean from a boat or beach.

I can lose some serious track of time like that.

Grounds me in life. It's like the Ctrl-Alt-Del to refocus. As a vet with 1 Iraq deployment and 3 Afghanistan deployments, the fire pit is my refuge when I'm having a tough day.

The only thing that beats a good campfire is a good campfire on the beach.
