It isn't that bad. My brother lives on the lake and I enjoy my visits. Mandeville and Covington were much better, but have become overcrowded

I would move there, if I found a nice place on the water.

Others are saying Bay St Louis. It is definitely a nice place to live. It sounds like you may be older. I would also recommend to look in the kiln. Nice area on the rise and not as much risk hurricane wise compared to the bay.

If you decide to move to Slidell, and have school age children, please buy in the Northshore High District. Lake Village is in the NHS school district.

Moved to the Northshore in 1990, we built in a subdivision off of Military Road (unincorporated, not in city limits) before starting our family. Sent our boys to private school. Then 12 years later built in another subdivision (unincorporated, not in city limits) and sent them to NHS for high school.

When our boys graduated from college, we moved over here to Covington. We absolutely love it!

Honestly, just about everyone we were friends with in Slidell have all moved over here to Mandeville, Madisonville, Covington. The ones that have not moved from Slidell, can not wait to get out and plan on moving in the near future.

Slidell has changed dramatically since Katrina. It is so sad. Not the same place we raised our boys. It was a great place to live when they were young.

Both of their Winn Dixies' are now Aldi's and there is only one Rouses. They don't have the shopping choices like they used to when we were there.

There are so many grocery stores (Fresh Market, Whole Foods, several Rouses, Winn Dixie's, etc...), Target , Walmarts, shopping, restaurants, to choose from on this side of St. Tammany.
It is a different world here on the west side of St. Tammany.

It just depends on what you are in search of and what is most important to you.

Zoned for Northshore High School

Which is weird. I know their has to be a cutoff point somewhere, but there are neighborhoods in walking distance from Northshore zoned in Salmen district.

Grew up on Bayou Bonfouca with 8 acres and a private Island.

I always chuckled at the Beau Chene snobs trying to look down on me.

Enjoy dealing with your stuck up neighbors 5 feet away and driving a boat to launch anytime you want to fish Lake Pontchartrain.

Yep

Bayou bonfucca or bayou Liberty are fantastic places to live

The the OP
Depends what you’re after. Slidells not for everyone but if you like to fish and hunt, and have close access to nola, and maybe a trip to Covington- Mandeville sometimes, it’s one of the best places in the state.

Again, it’s not for everyone but it’s not the trash you see off the interstate. It has a lot more to offer.

Frankly, from what I’ve seen the past few years, it’s been discovered. Maybe try Lacombe

It definitely has changed a lot. Grew up in westechester and went to salmen. Even then the school wasn't that bad but it rough now. My mother's house on OST gets a bad element around it now. Fortunately they live in Indian Village

Does it have bad areas, yes. Does it have good areas, yes. I love Slidell. Lots of cool things to do, not as snobby as mandeville, rather inexpensive (check your homeowners quotes though, they are getting terrible everywhere), great seafood, good resturants, etc.

The hate is becasue it is a blue collar area on the southside of slidell

Where are these "snobs" some in this thread and others in previous threads have mentioned? I've been in West St. Tammany for decades and haven't encountered them.

Moved here 2 years ago from da parish. Living the in Indian Village area now which we LOVE and is also in the Northshore high district several have mentioned which is the main reason we moved out here. We're far enough out of the "city" living on almost 3 acres but also close enough to so many amenities that we get the best of both worlds.

Definitely look into insurance premiums, specifically your full risk flood policy cost, not the cost of your policy now. USAA is a great option if you have access.

Saw several it's not the same since Katrina comments, which applies to every single area down here so take those with a grain of salt.

Palmettos is amazing, but not good enough to justify living in Slidell.

- close to NOLA (this was a positive then; not sure if still the case)
- easy access to LSU
- easy access to AL/FL beaches

one of the top things about living in slidell is you're close to lsu, new orleans, alababama, and the panhandle of florida
