Lots of legal records written in cursive, everything from land records to court rulings to the declaration of independence. In my experience, those that can't write it have a hard time reading it.
Having gone to the Library of Congress as a kid it’s hard to imagine being a American and not being able to read the documents your country was founded on.
Any repetitive exercise a grade school child does has value in many areas of their development whether it has practical value as a adult not, in this case fine motor skills.

I’m surprised to see so many people say they don’t write in cursive. I write everything in cursive. Notes, letters, cards, etc.
ETA... my kids are 22, 20 and 17. They did not learn cursive.

When I got married just 15 years ago, we hired someone to print the addresses for the invitations, in calligraphy.
That was normal back then.
Today, a wedding invitation just comes with a computer generated label with a fancy font.

Learn to sign your name and move on.
That’s the biggest thing I can think of. By not learning cursive you wouldn’t know how to write your signature. Mine is just a scribbly line but somehow I feel like I needed to know cursive to do that

I don't know why, but good penmanship gave me a little more respect for a person.
Because some angry old teacher probably beat into your head that this now completely arbitrary skill was a way to earn respect.

I hated cursive, but I enjoyed calligraphy back in the early 80s. I doubt many know what calligraphy is now.

We had to learn it. All my teachers said youd have to write papers in college in cursive.
Yet when i got to college no professor accepted anything in handwriting.
So learning cursive was a giant waste of time and pain on my fingers.

Well, if they don't learn to write it, they won't know how to read it either. There will be a lot of old historical documents that kids will not be able to read.

You're worried about what the world is coming to because of stylistic writing choices?

This trend of not teaching handwriting has gone on for a couple of decades.
An English teacher told me, “Who am I to tell kids how to write?”

I’m slowly falling behind the times I guess.
Have you seen a college student or graduate attempt to write a note or manuscript? It’s illegible in print, let alone script, they make a Dr.’s signature seem like calligraphy. I’m assuming it depends upon the educational institution, I have a 7th grader and yes, part of their English curriculum consists of actually writing and penmanship.
It’s one of the cornerstones of human society and should never be endangered of becoming an afterthought. Sure you can listen to a book or a podcast, but that doesn’t mean you can read or have any reading comprehension skills. Imagine if the grid goes down how many people would be unable to survive, even though billions of humans thrived previously without it?

One must know how to write cursive to read it.

They cut this out a long time ago. I was pissed when I found out because that kicked my arse in second grade.
