Is it really that easy to rob a bank?

Seems like a lot of real life crime shows I watch involve bank robbers or guys on the run from something who end up robbing 5-6 banks to get some cash. Heard about a local guy in Houston today that police are searching for called the Cowboy Bandit who's already got 3 bank robberies under his belt.

Seems like out of all the places, a major bank would be the hardest thing to rob and get away with...security, daylight hours, people everywhere, usually in populated areas around busy streets, etc.

What gives? Can a lowly OT banker provide some insight?

Banks are "easy" to rob, but nearly impossible to get away with.

Whether it be the ink bag, cops, cameras, etc.

Plus the bankers don't have access to the big money, which is on a timed opening and closing.

Best case you may make out with 20 grand

Easy to do. Hart to get away with.

Banks value the lives of workers instead of the drop in the bucket money the robber took which will probably be returned when the dumbass fricks up anyway.

Banks don't care about losing money in a robbery. That's what they've got insurance for. They also probably consider it a huge liability in this day and age to even resist a robbery out of fear of getting sued for a patron or employee getting hurt.

A bank robber did an AMA on Reddit a few years ago. Said it was terribly easy to rob banks. Basically, if you kept it under 5k, it is too much hassle for the cop and banks to pursue who the robber is, and no news station wants to pick it up. He finally had a guilt and turned himself in. They could never catch him.

That just takes a certain level of audacity to get over. The rest is actually easy.

I worked at a bank some years ago and if a robber demanded money, it was protocol to do as demanded as to not risk lives of employees and customers. A lot of robberies are actually pretty smooth, and not like the kind you see on TV. Some happen without anyone knowing until the robber leaves.

There is a really interesting AMA on this very subject ... Doesn't seem as hard as one would think...

Teller lives matter. Give em the cash and live to see another day. Let the cameras document and try to catch the criminals. Unless there is a guard on duty I doubt most banks have active methods of preventing a til from being emptied. Or did this guy get into 5-6 vaults?

this is a big part. they don't have THAT much cash available so it's best to comply and give it over

robbing a bank isn't hard. getting away with it is pretty difficult

to have any chance of hiding out, you better have a lot of criminal connections in place

I worked at a bank when I was younger, and tellers do have access to the main vault at any time.

I am sure it is. It is the 'not getting caught' that is the issue.

Do banks even keep that much cash on hand these days? If so, do they really keep large amounts in the vault like in a box or something? They probably have a hidden smaller vault somewhere where they actually keep cash that they have on hand besides what's in the drawers.

Bank employees are trained to comply with robbers. All that money is insured, and it would be stupid to risk your life to protect it. I have read several stories of people robbing banks unarmed. They don't really make it away with very much money. Maybe a few thousand dollars at most. Eventually they may get caught. There are cameras and other things that can go wrong. It certainly isn't worth the risk, especially for that little money. Just getting out of the building and away with the money seems like it would be pretty easy though.

Its a trade off. If they put up too much glass and partitions, the people who bank there feel more unwelcome. If they keep it open and friendly, they make themselves the targets of easy robberies. But, as pointed out, they almost never get away with it.
