Don't see any kids in 12U swinging -5. If they are it's mostly their parents thinking they are the next Ohtani or Judge.
We didn't just walk into the store and grab a bat. i knew this was going to be expensive so we researched it a ton. here's how we went about it: his old bat was a 29 -10. We hit with other bats that we could get our hands on:
30 -5
31 -8
32 -3
etc, wood, composite, one piece, hybrid. He swang in cages with pitching, soft toss, off of tee's to get a feel. We also watched as many comparison videos talking about both "hotness" and durability. We settled on 31 -5 marucci cat x composite because it seemed like the best of all worlds. I searched for the cat 9 composite same size and couldn't find one.
i don't think he's a major league hitter. He has thick legs and is strong for an 11 year old and can handle this bat. you don't have to agree, i'm just telling you our process.

not reading the whole thread
but my son has a CatX Composite and it's a very solid bat
uses it for BP and games; no weighted balls

11, he's mid spurt. which is why we went 31 -5.
the only kid on our 12u team that swings a 31 -5 very well is a kid that's shot up to be 5'9-5'10 already.

Batting cage, soft toss, games, all good. I would not hit weighted balls.
And, don’t let other kids use the bat because they don’t take care of it like their owner.

i'm actually surprised at the amount of legit information i've gotten, way better than expected.

i'm a bat savant... baseball and fastpitch.

Swing the composite bat as much as possible. The more swings the hotter it gets. I would not hit heavy balls with it. regular baseballs, all tee work and front toss, the more swings the better.
When its cooler weather composite can break and is not as explosive. Have a regular bat for the cooler fall and spring tourneys.

some of us here have kids that actually like baseball not like the rest of the OT that thinks anything that interferes with drinking at the fishing camp is dumb AF and should be made fun of.

My 9 year old uses a Cat 9 that is a hybrid I believe. 2 piece. He likes the feeling of it being more end loaded than the Cat X.

Probably should have just gotten him a cheap bat and spent money on going to the batting cage.
We have one of those clam shell batting cages we hit soft toss into but they've busted the seams. I found a facebook deal for a backyard cage that i'll be putting up soon.

Can’t have a $200 bat with a $2 swing

fully agree. that's another thing i told him before we bought it, that he needs to show me he's committed to working on it. Many nights i'll be inside and can hear pinging coming from my garage as he and hit brother throw soft toss to each other. he's come a long way and has even further to go.

My kid is playing 9u, kid pitch for the first time. i got him a cat8 non composite. Thank goodness cause he only got one hit all year lolol. He does have a .650 on base percentage due to his discipline at the plate, he does not get out the way, and does not swing at balls. haha.
If he can prove he can hit the ball with the cheap bat i'll start looking at the better composites.

Whats yalls thoughts on a 9u coach that has a 5 minute profanity laced flat our yelling session berating the kids and saying he was embarrassed to be their coach after a loss to a superior team? I almost lost my shite.....
Congrats to the lugnuts for winning the tournament. very skilled players and coaches.
