to spontaneously combust?

Engine off and key not in ignition.

The claim is that the fire originated in the winch, which was not running. Engine has to be running for winch to work. And it was just sitting there. For 3 days.

Hunting baws chime in.

This doesn't make sense, winch is powered by the battery. Sure the key probably has to have the electrical system turned on, but engine running?

ETA: and have another downvote for that UGA girl gameday thread....you fricking frick

extremely unlikely...but if the wench was connected to the battery and the battery got to hot....maybe.

doubtful in my non-expert opinion.

Was it a sunny day with a very large magnifying glass over top of it?

No, most likely somebody flicked a cigarette or some kind of spark on to it or a greasy wench

Yes

Faulty wiring between which an ATV.

Turning the key off may not cut off power supply to winch.

Yes. I'm guessing a Polaris 450?

Yes, this could happen easy. Grounding out a battery will catch fire easy.

Winches are usually wired directly to the battery, meaning the key doesn't have to be turned on to operate it.

Very possible, people that add winches to ATVs and Jeeps and do the work themselves often do not do a correct installation with proper fusing of the power leads. It is likely the insulation of the power lead chaffed and grounded, or something in the winch solenoid shorted to ground, if there was no fuse in the power lead to blow it would become very hot and ignite anything flammable around it.

Matthew 19:26

But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Bike doesn’t have to be running to run the winch. Winch is wired directly to battery. So yes, technically possible.

While it seems unlikely, a wire could have been damaged causing a "slow current leak" to ground gradually heating up to the point where the plastics started to burn.

Especially if the wire in question wasn't fused.

Very possible. Had a winch on one of mine engage with it parked in the garage and key out. Its wired into the battery and activated. It was smoking hot when I got to it and I was in the house and heard it spooling.

Been sitting in the garage for a few days.

Cars go up spontaneously more often than we would hope.

Ford recalled millions of vehicles for a faulty cruise-control deactivation switch that could develop a short circuit.

"Regulators say that could cause a vehicle to catch fire even while it is parked and the ignition is off. The switch’s function is to cut off the cruise control when the driver taps the brakes."

They burned down several houses. Cars had been parked for hours, then poof.

LINK

More recently, Nissan recalled more than 215,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. due to a fire risk from
an anti-lock brake pump that could can leak brake fluid onto a circuit board, causing an electrical short and increasing the fire risk.

I know of two homes locally that were destroyed. One by a Lincoln that went up in the middle of the night, and the other by a Nissan Murano.

Friends boat stern light shorted out. It was one of those pole ones you stuck in the socket, was attached to his rear seat, and always connected to the battery. The wiring coming into the socket shorted and it started smoldering and smoking pretty good.

It had been sitting overnight in the same spot and we had just checked on it a little bit before.

So what I’m saying - there’s a chance the wiring went bad, but you should check what’s near the winch? Usually it’s on metal out on the bumper, so not much to burn.
