Is it better for a kid to be at home with mom until 3 or 4 years old, or go to daycare?

My wife and I have our kid stay at home with her until it's time for him to start pre-k. This feels right for us, but sometimes I wonder if he's missing out on socialization and learning experiences at daycare as well. What says the OT?

Home with mom in general

2 days a week or so at daycare interacting with kids is a good thing though

are you going to wait longer than 4 years to have another? That would be a major factor IMO.

Your kid is probably going to be the weird one in class unless you also did a bunch of other activities with kids their same age.

My nieces are two years apart and started day care together.

The younger one has a better immune system, but she's not as mature in terms of behavior.

Daycare is both good and bad for social interaction. Bad for health, although it may help overall immune system in the long run. Still sucks when whole house gets sick because some parent sent kid to daycare with the Flu or HFM or Strep.

Some regular social interaction is great for the kid and the mother. However, daycare can be uncontrolled, pick up bad habits from other kids, etc. A regular routine also helps tremendously once school starts.

My wife always tells me his skin is so dark because her grandma was part Cherokee. Are you telling me she might be lying?

If possible, home school, spend 15 minutes with my grandson and granddaughter and you will be convinved. they have plenty options to socialize with other kids.

we do not know them all but....we owe them all

I bring my kid to the pipeline and he totes my rod bucket. Your snowflake would probably melt out there

The kid is gonna get sick one way or another. Send them to daycare, they're sick every other week. Wait till preschool to send them, they'll be sick every other week then too. Seen it happen with a friends kid, they kept the kid at home until kindergarten, then spent a year bitching that the kid was sick every other week.
The immune system has to catchup at some point, now or later.

Yeah I'm not as worried about the getting sick aspect. It's more a social thing for me. Hell I'd almost rather him get sick now rather than later.

It depends on the specific kid, parents, and daycare. There are too many variables to simply say one is better than another. Some kids need more social interaction to develop social connections/norms. Some parents are better parents if they are not with the child 24/7. No two daycare settings are the same.

We did daycare and so far it's been the best fit for us though far from perfect at times. Home with mom is probably the safest bet but if you can find/afford a good daycare that's a good choice too.

If you're worried about it the good news is you care and thus will probably not be a shitty parent.

This is absolute truth, but I love how people downvoted it as though it’s not true.
