I started working for a contractor in a plant in 2013 as a laborer for $13/hr. Shitty shift work hours and shitty work conditions. It’s crazy to think people are getting paid more than that working at McDonald’s not even 10 years later

It's unavoidable, I bust my arse to put my two in private school and my 14-year-old daughter is 100% into the whole non-binary sexual pans and all that stuff

That’s what I’m saying. Going to tell mine to move to Alaska and become tour guides like Roger.

I don’t know man. I’m usually in 100 percent agreement with this mindset. I paid off 93k in student loans in 2.5 years in 08-10.
Right. Several folks have alluded to student loans. One would assume college grads (accordingly with student loans) in a 3% unemployment environment are not the target audience for a bluecollar warehouse job.

started out in 2014 with two college degrees at 36K. Then in another year was at around 45K. Moved to a completely different part of the country and started making 65K. Within 3 years I was at around 85K. After 6 years of working I'm at 95K with a potential in a couple years of 135K or so.

People that aren't moving anywhere in the job market either: (1) Don't have skills that are needed, (2) don't know how to market themselves/don't care about moving up, (3) aren't willing to move around to find places where they can make things work.

They're doing $18 to start here with tuition reimbursement, and its a bunch of Filipino seniors working the kitchen. They finally automated, got tired of the shite. There's no front counter anymore.

Its a legit problem but millennials dealt with it too. Zoomers aren't alone in this.

I saw this for the first time in BR recently. New Taco Bell with iPad ordering. Probably how they'll all be in 10 years

$1500 in todays dollars is about $4100
15/hr in 2022 is $31,200. So you made $9,800 more a year. Even by today's numbers a roughly $10K salary difference is pretty solid. But let's look at it a little deeper.

According to MN Fed.org, $1 in 1984 has the buying power as $2.61 cents in 2021. And since 2021, inflation has skyrocketed.

But even as of last year...

If we took your salary of $41k an year and adjusted it for the MN Fed inflation data $1(1984) = $2.61(2021), your $41k salary has the same amount of buying power as $107K. That $9,800 extra ($41k - $31.2k) is the same as $25.5k in 2021. That's 81% of the salary you are in here saying is acceptable.

So to wrap it all up and put it in plain language for you, your "shitty" salary that you said you "made it on"... Would be like someone who make $107K in New York last year saying they barely making it.

And you're out of touch arse is in this thread bitching at someone complaining about making $31K a year, and somehow think your experience is very similar to their current one.

Living in Alaska with this kind of inflation is almost totally unsustainable unless there are two people working in a family.

Unless you are willing to live below your means and subsist on fish, moose, berries, etc...which I guess alot of people nowadays aren't really able/wanting to do.

I was able to save a lot of money doing those things while up there, but I've seen that life spit out a lot of people who weren't prepared for it.

If I was barely able to make rent, I definitely wouldn't want to buy something they'll come take if I can't pay and have to risk repairs on it.

Stop trying to use anecdotal evidence to support a hypothesis of wanting everyone to move to a place like Alaska

Not necessarily true. But only in certain fields. I know a bunch of people in IT/Security that only have certificates and/or work experience and are making $$$$ without a degree

America was the greatest place to live when simply having a work ethic and entering the work force meant you could afford a house in a safe neighborhood. That was the American dream

Now? You better have an advanced degree when entering the workforce if you want hone ownership. The simple work ethic will only guarantee you an apartment to rent in a bad part of town
