Did it sail a long, long time ago? I think in almost everything is IS a good thing. From the Kama Sutra to fresh ideas in a company meeting it CAN be good. Forcing it to happen in society is not good though. It is why we don't marry out of our own family.

And like most are saying, diversity is definitely good when it is naturally occurring. Not when it's forced.

Diversity is a neutral concept that has been misunderstood to be a good in itself.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Mexican nationals and Mexican culture. That doesn't mean I should be happy to let Mexicans displace people like me.
As everyone else has said, it's wrong to force diversity on people. That forcing is usually done by two types of people: minorities whose situation will be improved by the forced mixing, and elites who live behind gates and send their children to schools where a years tuition is above the poverty line.

That's correct. The question in itself is dumb. It's like asking "is humidity a good thing?". It's not good or bad, it's just a thing.

I'd say it is. It's good to have the sharing of ideas from diverse backgrounds, because they may have been exposed to something that you never would have been, and therefore can find a solution that you would have never considered.
Diversity gets shitty though when a person tries to silence another's opinion, violently or otherwise. Sadly many people who claim to praise diversity are the least tolerant of diverse point of views. Liberals have gotten the worst about this and really no longer stand for liberal principles, just PC Principals.

You can get diversity from the TV and internet and a trip to NO. It's better to have like minded people for neighbors.

Because if you only hang out with people who have your exact opinions, you're going to become more radical and less open to new ideas. Whenever you do run into someone who has a different opinion than you, you will tend to get violent and be irrational. Please look at any nation that doesn't have a diverse population, and see for the most part that they are highly stagnant. Diversity is good in its raw non-politicized form.

I love your "holier-than-thou" attitude when your society doesn't really have to put up with diversity at all. People in Upstate New York can be just as backwards arse rednecks as we can, they are just completely ignorant of it unlike southerners. But please continue with your ignorance on why southern education as a whole tends to be worse than northern education.

I went to one of the better public elementary schools in my hometown. It was a magnet school where you tested in, so kids from the whole parish could attend. It also had a quota that 1/3 of incoming students had to be minorities. Fast forward 20 years and I, an attorney, am solidly middle of the pack in terms of education/success. That was forced diversity on a tiny scale that has had a huge impact for those families.

Like I said, as a minority your situation was improved by the forced mixing/affirmative action.
Did it objectively help your fellow students to attend school with people who couldn't get in by testing like everyone else? I'm not saying you couldn't have, but certainly some of the 1/3 wouldn't have made it in.
What about the kids who tested higher but missed the cut due to the 1/3 rule? Did it help them?

I am white and I lived in a decent school district. I would've been fine either way, but certainly benefited by going to a better school. The minorities who ended up in my class, by and large, would've gone to much worse schools than my neighborhood alternative. They also tested in, so they were all intelligent (or as intelligent as a 5 year old reasonably can be). The white kids who missed the cut due to any affirmative action still had other magnet schools from which to choose, though all magnet schools in my parish had (likely still have) the 1/3 rule.

You are right in that being totally closed off and isolated has throughout history meant stagnation.
However, there is a difference between opening up your country to trade and a few migrants on the one hand and inserting section 8 housing all over a city, for example, on the other hand.

Companies hiring people just 20 years ago looked for people that "fit in" with their existing employees. People that thought the same way, dressed the same way, etc. That's good for getting you there quickly but you may not end up in the right place.
I'm a big advocate of diversity. Especially given how diverse our country is.
