It feels like we buy about $4,000 worth of gifts as a family and maybe take home around $2500 if we’re lucky. It feels like one of those internet scams where you get a bunch of people to mail you a dollar. Even when I was single I don’t think I spent less than I got. Does anyone feel like they come out ahead at the end of the day?

Once you feel obligated to give, yes, you are being scammed.

If you're approaching gift giving as a net loss/gain activity, kindly take the largest stick in your yard and jam it in your rectum

Here's my advice:

Learn to make gifts
Write a book and publish it. Give it as a gift.
Buy your Christopher Radko ornaments when they go on clearance sale after Christmas.

I'll spend less than $300 on gifts this year. Most of them for buttocksnclarse.

Just register a bunch of alters on imgur and sign up for secret Santa, but don't buy gifts. Or... You could focus on what Christmas is really about instead of trolling.

Yes. It is merely an economic booster at this point.

It sounds like most people don’t come out ahead. I’m trying to figure out where the extra goes to. I guess it goes to the stores. Sorry for trying to think below the surface and opening a few peoples eyes.

I tried picking up things that could be useful around the house or could be educational.

My two boys are always fighting over the spare TV in my office to play Xbox so Black Friday was a great time to solve that fight in the house. Picked up my oldest son the Lego Mindstorm set so that he could some exposure to coding and engineering while having some fun. Picked up the Cricut Maker for my wife (no pics) so that she can make some knock-off Salt Life and Yeti stickers for my back window or cans.

how stupid does one of those 3 wise men feel right now, giving away gold to a baby? in today's money, accounting for inflation, that'd be worth 10s of millions at least.

Its not a scam, but it is heavily commercialized.

You know what gets me? Buying gifts for people who buy you gifts of equal value. The gift giving should be for the kids. But it is the time when some retail stores actually make their money..So it is big for the economy.

Been married 37 years and raised two fine young men and I can't recall spending more than $750 - $1000 ... even in the "best" years. Tightwad, nope, both my wife and I never felt the urge to go into debt buying "stuff" that would by forgotten or end up at the goodwill in three months.
Without spending the bank, I would put our Christmas memories up against anyone's.
