Is being a member of 2 different branches of the military a thing?

Watching stupid hotel renovation show.
Owner said he was in Air Force and Navy.
I can never recall hearing of such a setup.
Is that possible? If so, how?

Not at the same time but lots of people have served in more than one branch. There's even specific recruiting programs for that like 'Blue to Green'.

Yeah you can be in another branch and the navy at the same time because the navy doesn’t really do anything.

Prior service Airforce then transfer to Navy. Is a thing.
ETA: I am Army Nationa Guard and also Space Force though because I mastered Halo.

The general answer is yes but it is unusual, especially while under contract. I remember a while back (possibly still active) something called Operation Blue to Green for moves from the Navy to the Army.

Not simultaneously. I knew more than a few guys in the Navy who had served in other branches previously.

My son was a marine for 6 years. Did a couple of tours to Afghanistan then got out. Got married. Had a kid. Got a divorce. He’s been in the army a couple of years now. Says it’s the easiest money that he’s ever made. Laughs about a lot of things in the army...but he loves it!
I’m glad that he got back in the military. He doesn’t play well in civilian life.

Cool thing is, if youre a marine and get out, you can walk right into another branch but any branch coming into the Corps has to go through marine basic.

My cousin graduated from West Point, then went in to the Air Force. That was many moons ago, though.

Uh, I knew a guy that 101st Airborne, and then later National Guard, he was active duty Guard for awhile than Reserves, I believe. I think that's pretty standard though.

Why the frick would you give up ice cream and naptime and sending the officers to be the bullet sponges?

Going from active duty to Reserve or Guard within the same branch is not unusual at all. Normally ones stay within their military branch when they make the shift and even most stay within the same MOS (enlisted/NCO) or branch within the branch (officer). All five branches of the military have Reserves (federal control) but only the AF and Army have National Gaurd units (state control).

I could tell you but I’d have to kill you

Lot of Marines that go into the Army since the USMC doesn't look to retain a high percentage past their first enlistment.
On the officer side during the height of the OIF years the Air Force had more cadets than they needed and the Army was short so a lot of AF ROTC cadets graduated but commissioned into the Army.
Army is huge and will take people from other branches. Every once and a while someone switches from the Army but a lot less common.

A very good friend of mine did 6 years in the Air Force got out started contracting for a year, then the contract dried up and then came back into the Army. It is not unheard of though not too common. In the Army I served with a few prior Airmen, Marines, and Sailors. Also you will usually be able to tell when someone served in another branch when they are in Class A uniform. You will see awards and badges from other branches.

When I was in the Army back in the 80’s some guys would switch from Navy to Army to be home more with their family.
