Is AAA still the best Roadside Assistance?

Son is going off to college in the fall, and I’m thinking about getting him a membership in case he breaks down and we’re too far away to help.

A fool and his money. Maybe your son should learn how to take care of himself since he’s technically an adult.

Part of my car insurance is tow service.. I think it's $3 a month.. Haven't ever used it so can't say if they are responsive.. But I did have AAA in the past and they were pretty good..

Geico has good roadside assistance
Chase credit cards have it also
Or you could do onstar. They’re still
Solid too.

Good to know. We switched to Geico last year, so I’ll look into adding it for all of us.

God knows we all have too many apps on our phones but yeah their app is solid and how you facilitate needing assistance
And an aside, I was rear ended on the interstate several years ago and the entire claim I put in was through their app, including taking pictures of the damage . I was hesitant about all that but it worked just fine. No issues. I’ve had geico for a decade and really have no plans on switching

You could just change your tire on your own or not let your gas run out

I've had AAA all of my driving life because my parents had it and I just carried it over. We get a good rate because they were members for so long.
In my experience, the dealer associated roadside service plans can be hit or miss. Back last year I was with a friend whose truck quit on him on the interstate in TN, maybe a half hour north of Nashville, almost to KY. He called his roadside service deal and they told him it would be three hours until they could get a tow to us. Because you can use AAA when you're with someone else in their vehicle I called them. They had the truck on the rollback in right at a half hour.
My days of changing flats on the side of an interstate with assholes doing 90+ just feet away while on their phones are over if I can at all help it. As far as cost..... one tow or unlock can almost offset it.

This is why I pay for AAA too. Half the roads in Louisiana are bridges with almost no room to change a tire too. F that.

I used to think this until I had to change my wife’s tire on the basin bridge

Correct, but changing a water pump, radiator, fuel pump, etc is a little beyond my scope….arse

If you’re driving down College drive and can pull into a lot to change the tire, then hell yeah. But Sometimes you need to change a tire in the dark or in the rain. Or on a road with no shoulder. And sometimes your spare is flat or something doesn’t go right.

If you have statefarm or any other insurance you can pay like 2$ a month for roadside
I've used it plenty of times with state farm.
Free towing and free unlock.

I firm believer in all kids learning to do the basics and made mine learn to change a tire and to drive a stick shift. However, changing a tire on the side of the road / interstate can be dangerous. If they can’t pull in a parking lot, use the $3 extra insurance charge and call road side service.

The last time I was with someone that needed AAA, we broke down on the side of the interstate. He called and they said they were sending a tow truck. 45 minutes later, no tow truck so he called again. After a couple of more iterations of this, they finally told us they couldn’t find anyone to come. It took about 5 minutes to find someone on our own and get him en route.
With the advent of smart phones, I see no need to have AAA any longer. Say “hey siri, emergency road service in this area” and it will give you a local list no matter where you are at any time. Everyone should try this.

Check you insurance policy. My Farm Bureau policy has roadside assistance.

I did have a dead battery at the MSY parking garage after returning home from a trip of a couple of weeks (at 2:30 am) and the parking garage operator there* has a free service for jump starting (a handheld device). It worked(!), I tipped the brother $30.00 for his service.
Changed a flat on Mrs Füt’s (no pics) vehicle this year and one on mine (passenger side on the Twin Span) last year. Could have called on either but I did it faster myself.
I carry a T-Wrench & rain gear in case…
*New South Parking (ETA), recommended.
Pro Tip, call them directly with a similar issue to mine. Don’t report that type of issue to the MSY staff. The MSY staff generally are lazy and unhelpful and they would (if they were doing their job) simply call New South to handle it..

I've used their tow service once when my car fully broke down in a parking lot and needed to get it to a shop.
Most useful is they will jump and/or replace your battery. It's really convenient if you car battery dies in your garage. Rather than jump it and drive to get a new battery, AAA will change it right in my garage. Super convenient
