You don't have to admit it. We can see it your eyes when you're walking around while visiting. It's apparent in your manner and your clothing as well. No dig, it just is what it is. The same way you could sniff out a city boy walking around Mamou.

it's hard to tell which urbanite men are gay or not. Honestly. You're all such fig pussies

There is absolutely no truth to this

New Orleans is one of the few places where your advice doesn’t really work.

quote:

1. Every major city has areas you avoid. You will know, without a doubt, when you're in one of those areas. Homeless will be everywhere, shady motherfrickers just standing around for no reason, shitty businesses on the streets with bars or pull-down doors for security at night. You see that, head back in the direction you came from.

The problem with New Orleans is that even UpTown, the safest part of the city is like that. The tourist parts of the city are really really dangerous.

quote:

2. Every major city has amazing areas with amazing things to do, food to eat, things to see and experience. Any man who would refuse to take his family to check out Chicago, for example, due to the unfounded thought that the entire city is a dangerous shithole, is not only a pussy, but also a fricking ignoramus.

Completely agree. Chicago does a great job of making its tourist areas like Miracle Mile and Wrigleyville safe AF.

3. Gangbangers don't want to murder tourists. Dead tourists bring on a lot of heat from the law and the press.

This is NOT TRUE in New Orleans. For some reason, the opposite is the case there. New Orleans criminals often try to vet if someone is a tourist or a local before robbing them. Robbing locals is seen as riskier because their families or friends might come after you. NOPD literally doesn’t enforce any laws except parking violations. You can rape and murder at will, and tourists’ families aren’t likely to track you down and get revenge. New Orleans criminals target tourists, which is why it’s such a big problem and obvious outlier that needs to be dealt with.

There's a lot of truth in it. Just saying "I grew up in a small southern town going to church" will elicit gasps in coastal cities.
There's whole threads on 4chan dedicated to Twitter posts from urbanite libs expressing their fear of rural America. It's hilarious.

Of course the most ridiculous part is urban areas actually are a lot more dangerous. A fear of cities is far more rational

Kinda. There are some neighborhoods in N.O. that I'll admit I don't feel safe, but for an entire city? That's ridiculous.

I live in a small town now, but when I was 18 and first moved down south, I can tell you what I felt and what my friends and family back home thought.

My first impressions of small town, rural south was a holy frick. Poverty everywhere, people who seemed incredibly uneducated and sheltered, Jesus billboards, entirely too friendly (we don't small talk up north), the accent which you'd always associated with "rednecks" was omnipresent, every restaurant seemed dirty and cooked uninteresting food, and clear racial segregation (not legal segregation, just segregated). So not scared or fearful, per se, rather feeling VERY out of place.

Now that I've lived down here for well over half of my life and have wholly embraced the south? I was just an ignorant kid, embracing the preconceptions formed in my youth and had absolutely zero understanding of what was actually important to folks living in small towns/rural areas. I still love visiting cities, but I love the laid back lifestyle of living down here in a small town.

I'm not used to culture. There was little to none in my hometown. When in the Army, I was combat arms, which is overwhelmingly white. Even in SoCal, the town I lived in was over 80% white.

It is what it is and what I'm comfortable with.

My son is getting married this fall, the talk is for the bachelor party to be in South Louisiana for fishing and a trip or two into New Orleans for debauchery, I'm trying to steer things in a different. If shite hits the fan somewhere and you end having to defend yourself with force even if you win you'll still be out a bunch of money, that is best case. Throw in a corrupt, racists judiciary system like NO and you could be sitting in jail for a long time. Screw that, you can have my man card, I'll be just fine.

How is not feeling safe women-like? Are you under the impression that men are impervious to bullets or something like that?

The "I dont feel safe" phenomenon may be part of the blurring of gender roles in America and the neutering of the American male.

Big cities. Yes that's pretty pussy foot.
But actual rough neighborhoods in large cities.. Then yes it's cool to say you aren't visiting particular parts of said cities. You'll probably never find me in Shawnee or Portland neighborhoods in the West End of Louisville

How am I lockstep with them?

There are plenty of racist assholes down here, just as there are up north. You're right, growing up the thought was that nearly every damn southerner was racist. Is that true? Hell no. I was definitely wrong about that. Does that mean I just pretend that there's no racism down here and turn a blind eye to it? No...why would I do that?

Rural Racist a-hole: mostly ignores you, maybe gives you mediocre service at a gas station or local business, says something mean under his breath

Urban criminal: carjacks you or robs you at gun point, possibly hits you in the crossfire while shooting at someone else.

One is an annoying speed bump in your day. The other is an end to your days and all days that would otherwise have followed.
