Officials in Manatee County, Florida are under fire after an interpreter for the deaf warned about pizza and monsters during an emergency briefing related to Hurricane Irma.

The interpreter, Marshall Greene, is a lifeguard for the county whose brother is deaf, according to the DailyMoth, a video news site that provides information via American Sign Language. Greene was used as the interpreter for a Sept. 8 press conference regarding the incoming storm and possible evacuations.

Members of the deaf community said Greene mostly signed gibberish, referencing "pizza," "monsters," and using the phrase "help you at that time to use bear big," during the event. Other information signed to viewers was incomplete, experts said.

Someone I know, who works at a hospital and has to make sure their are interpreters when deaf people go to their appointments told me that "the deaf community" are some angry people. Like, that are always complaining and they will flip out if an interpreter is not certified.

Anyway, this story got me thinking. So they were watching this on TV right? How do they normally know what is being said on TV? I would assume cc is on.. So if that is the case, why do they need an interpreter?

I guess so, can't effectively communicate with most folks. I don't want to imagine the struggle.

Maybe the interpreter was blaming Irma on ManBearPig.

The deaf person I work with is ridiculously rude. He acts like it's my fault he is deaf. I have heard many are like that, but who really knows.

Were the wrong signs close to the right ones? Was he just trying to look like he knew what he was doing when he had no clue? Or was it a troll job?

Some were close, mostly he didn't understand ASL phrasing. I have a deaf son and this is what I'd look like trying to interpret.

I work with several deaf people who are extremely nice and understanding of the language barrier. Kind of interesting that the brokedick in here is throwing stones.

Imagine if your doctor couldn't clearly communicate with you about your diagnosis and prognosis. That's a legit issue with a non-certified interpreter. It doesn't seem like the guy in the OP was being a smartass. He just isn't an interpreter and shouldn't be in the situation. He was put in a bad spot. That said, with a deaf brother, he was probably really wanting to help the deaf community.

As for CC, that also requires that it either be pre-typed or someone has to be doing it live. You can't be sure that every news agency has someone sitting at the ready to do so.

Sorry but that's funny as hell to me.

Hooked up with a very attractive deaf girl years ago. We only dated for a couple of weeks. I was young and had a couple of room mates. We all worked construction. When I got her in bed, I wanted to literally cover her mouth. She was having a great time but could not hear herself. And she was fricking LOUD!

My roommates loved the hell out of her. I broke it off gently. Didn't want to learn sign language. She read lips impressively well.

Sweet gal. I still get fricked with about the hoots and hollers. Worth it!
