Anybody see this anymore? Always hear about LA having some of the highest incarceration rates in the nation, why don’t we put these thugs to work?

I’m sure the work product would be excellent and totally worth the risk/trouble.

That said, you can’t force them to work, so you’d just take what you can get.

Louisiana no longer has the highest incarceration rates. We’ve been letting them all out recently on early termination because the state can’t pay for them.

Hard labor is no longer that. Three hots and a cot..... and the occasional arse-fricking.

Very common here in MS...getting out to do some work is considered a privilege when incarcerated. the nicer areas of towns actually have female inmates out landscaping the medians and keeping things nice, too.

Rapides parish does it perfectly. They have a medium 'tier' of workers, not regular inmates but not quite 'trustee's. They are put on one of a dozen or so work crews of 8-10 guys with one armed officer as the guard. They weed eat the parks, highways, city buildings and pick up litter at each too. They also do a lot of work at the air base out there that the soldiers don't do, like raking leaves and cutting grass. In return for working every day, they get much better food, probably on the quality level of a low rent Piccadilly. They also get longer visiting hours and get to go in the yard pretty much anytime they're off work. They can also purchase cigarettes and dip through the commissary. It's a trade off and when incarcerated, anything to get you out of those walls and out of your head is a blessing. IF you violate any major rules or refuse to go to work, they kick you out the camp and you go back to general population in a dorm with 60 other inmates 24 hours a day and have to fight to get your food tray. It's win-win. I don't know why BR doesn't start a program like that. It's run perfectly in Alexandria.

Yeah, if I got arrested I had to do that too. Also, I would have had to wash firetrucks, pick up litter, work at the food kitchen downtown, etc.

Well, I live in a rural part of Northern St Tammany Parish and I see inmates on the side of the road picking up trash quite a lot. They are guarded by a couple of deputies with shotguns in a van. I don’t think they are violent criminals, I’ve been told they are just people busted for drugs or not paying child support.

I don’t know much about this subject, just telling you what I’ve seen and heard.

I see inmate work crews regularly. They mostly pick up litter, mow, and weed eat. They occasionally perform other duties as assigned as well.

If you get locked up in Pontotoc, MS you get to grow your own food. Them boys grow enough vegetables to fill huge freezers for the whole year.

We have two crews around here. Our local jail does parish roads and DOC inmates on state highways
