Oh man. I am anti-video and that is a hill I will die on. Before Covid, we took phone calls. There was no expectation from someone who doesn't even employ me that they see me.

I will turn on my camera for professional things I'm leading/co-leading like webinar trainings or intro calls, but I don't turn on my camera for random questions that could have been a phone call. And I def don't turn it on for internal powwows with our team, as they are N/A to me 90% of the time and I'm only included because I think the team has no idea what I do.

Developing software would drive me insane.
Sucks to be you.

100% truth.

Video is not needed. I've managed just fine without people seeing my face the last 5 years.

Iam working but my professional headshot in place of initials is better than having to dress up for a half hour meeting.

I have a dress on and full makeup in my headshot. Husband has a suit on. That is not how we wfh.

I’m a network engineer. Each day I get called into some meeting with a DB admin or application owner claiming “firewall” or “load balancer” or “network”. Spend 5 minutes determining definitively that it isn’t any of those, demonstrate this to them, and spend another 30 minutes waiting on them to accept this fact and move on to the next step in troubleshooting.

There's a decline button on meeting invites. Use it. There's also a comment section when you decline. Use it.

I get this entirely. My original discipline in IT was networking then I ultimately went into the dev side. We do get periodic networking issues, and those are generally more wide spread. If one aspect is failing, and not all, it's usually not networking. If everything in a related manner is failing, networking is then a possibility. But most of the time it is just software misbehaving. And I can concede that. I generally exhaust everything I can before getting Network or Security involved.

Why would you have to “dress up” like you look in your headshot, does your company have a dress code?

I’m usually just wearing a polo shirt and jeans.

It happens. But we monitor more than anyone else. If it is network, I know before the users/other IT people.

There are several people in our org who if they call/slack me I know they are pretty sure it is a problem I can assist with..but not most of them.

That said, I honestly don’t mind. I’ve become very skilled at leading groups of people in other disciplines thru troubleshooting their stuff and finding the problem.

Right because you are a guy. Even if I wear jeans and a nice top my hair takes much longer to fix and women normally wear makeup. One swipe with a comb and wash your face and men are good. It is not professional to have messy hair and no makeup on imo. Even if it is fine to you the headshot is much nicer and more polished.

Anything with code takes time to figure out. Of course the users of the service you're coding have no idea. Whatever menial job they have is pretty easy to answer questions for.

I'd suggest developing a template for the end users to fill out beforehand. Also, when I Get outside of the code and need engineering support, I build a powerpoint that shows live data at the time of the issue. I present that to the support team so they have actual data and know what happened. It seems to help.

When you have a meeting and ask for input, but ignore the suggestion or concern or management stops you from presenting it. And then get mad at you for even talking about it or bringing it up.

1. This code is old and needs to be modernized. Because engineers turnover their entire stack and philosophy every 5 years.

2. The last developer was an idiot and wrote this poorly.

A pretty decent chunk of software developers just like to play with toys, they don't care if what they do actually solves a problem or not.
