My daughter lost a classmate on Saturday to suicide. Kid was well liked, sports player and smart. It is scary what is going on in kids heads to make them think the only way out is death. He was 15. Terribly sad.
Yes, I know children that knew him. It breaks my heart to think he thought this was the only way. I hope the school reiterates the fact that there’s life outside of school. That high school is important but it’s not worth your life.

They have been. I know I pulled my teen in and had that talk. They are providing counseling all week for any of the students.

that’s good because it needs to be said over and over again to these kids

yes, he was the same age as my third child - which is why I know children who knew him. We had a talk yesterday, too, and also at our church’s youth group we had a huge talk also mainly bc many of the kids are also classmates.

It’s tough, especially on the kids.

Yes. It was a very somber day at school. I drive her and one of her classmates to school in the am and usually they talk a good bit this morning it was so quiet. Just so so so sad.

Not to mention the rigors of teenage life now being paired with this ability to document every waking second of their lives.

Social media is absolutely horrendous for teenagers.

I would have much preferred the school do an outreach to the students on teen suicide.

The pdf the school sent about “talking to adolescents about death” was not very useful.

I am sure there are some privacy issues but ignoring that a student committed suicide is not the right approach.

Because we stopped telling kids (and people in general) no that’s wrong you aren’t a giraffe, do you homework and go play outside. No one gives a shite about whatever you’re crying about on TikTok go bag groceries at the store.

Its just worrying too much about what others think.

I used to care so much. In HS I would spend like 40 minutes doing my hair. Now I dont give a frick so much on the day to day basis. yeah if im going out to a nice dinner or going to someones wedding ill look good. But recently i went a few months without shaving. no one cared.

I couldnt imagine what its like with social media.

Without a doubt. Even pre-teens are invested and addicted.

Speaking as someone who has been on a grief counseling team in a situation like this, you’re basically doing triage after something like this happens in a community. You provide comfort, refer out to individual therapy if needed, and later on you utilize outreach services.

When it happens in a school, FERPA also comes into play, so you’re really limited in what you can provide that the parents don’t willingly release as well.

I can’t speak for Louisiana, but Kentucky requires training for students and staff at the beginning of the school year for suicide prevention and awareness. With a follow up mid-year. But there’s been some legislation passed in the last couple of years limiting what you can ask as a school counselor.

Look at society today. Vapid, gilded, shallow nothing. I know some folks won’t like to hear this, but a lot of kids grow up away from the church from the time they’re born. More than ever in our nation’s history. They aren’t necessarily taught that their lives not only have meaning, but have a spark of divinity in them. They’re not taught that “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee.”

There is a higher purpose to all life, there is a greater purpose than just being plopped down here.

I posit that if more kids were Christ centered, we’d have fewer studies like these.
