I think Columbine set the tone. Although there had been quite a few mass shootings throughout the history of the US, Columbine was the first to get the media attention that it did. That could be part of it.
Also, I think there are more kids born with some type of dysfunction due to having a mother who are addicts.
Talking to a friend of mine who is an elementary teacher is the source of why I think this, don't have any numbers to show this, but she says many of the kids with certain behavior problems, that she has dealt with, you can usually make certain assumptions about their mothers, after meeting them (thats the summary of the discussions).
This might not be a huge problem, but I think it can contribute.
Also, the internet allows people to have easy access to information so they are able to read up on other mass shootings.
Then some is a result of pure hate.
IMO there isn't just one reason. Everyone is looking for that one thing to blame, but it isn't just one thing. Its a collection of reasons, some related, some not.

Social media...media in general
Stupid to say but if it wasn’t reported with such emphasis it wouldn’t happen

Because it’s mentally deranged incels who can’t get pussy and feel like people should be punished for it. They live in their rooms all day scrolling through 4chan and are on the autistic spectrum.

America has no moral compass. Diversity is not our strength its just more opportunity for politicians to pit one group against another. Education system is a system of division and hate.
MSM is so dishonest and it fans the flame of unfairness and hate.

People want attention, people hate, guns are easy to get, ammunition is easy to get, it has become a popular thing to do.

So the actions of a handful of people lead you to the conclusion that there is no moral compas? Are all of your opinions based on such a small sample size.

Its a combination of factors, but I truly believe that a large part of it is that humans are social animals and how we evolved.
We used to have tribes of a few dozen...maybe a hundred. Maybe a couple of hundred as time went on. Really, even in the last 100 years, we have always existed in these tribes and within these numbers. Your work place. Your church. Your neighborhood. Your community
For most of our history, you had some sort of importance in that community. At some point, you were needed. It was harvest time. A group for hunting. Defending the Tribe, etc.
Social Media, internet, etc. has completely changed all of that. Our community is no longer just the people you see or intereact with or help out, etc.
The crazies were always going to be crazy, but they have no importance now, no place, no role. And the sheer pointlessness of their lives leaves them angry and looking to do something that matters. Something important. Its part of our social needs based from evolution.
Columbine changed everything- the way the media treated it, the 24 hours news cycle, etc.
These crazies now how an outlet for their rage, a way to feel that they matter. A way to be known and important in the community (and remember, community is know a large diverse place instead of a localized thing).
Idiots will focus on guns, video games, movies, etc. Those are all completely immaterial - and in fact, could possibly be used to help identify people having issues rather than washed away.
Mental Health plays a part - but the cats out of the bag (internet, media cycle, etc.) and the best mental health can do is help identify possible perpetrators but even that is fraught with a lot negatives and there will be a lot of people who would never do such a thing that may be impacted by being put on a list, etc.

So crazy isn’t new, guns aren’t new. So what is? What’s changed to make so many people decide to start mowing people down randomly?
The amount of free time (not having to work, some people aren't good at managing so much free time in a non-destructive manner).
More people (as our population grows the likelihood of murderous assholes grows as well, also it could be argued this might be an attempt by nature to slow down our population growth).
Shitty parenting (people letting TV and the interwebz raise their kids while they themselves are spending their time doing the same thing instead of spending quality offline time with their kids).

1966
University of Texas tower shooting: 25-year-old engineering student, Charles Whitman, shot and killed 15 people and wounded 31 during a 96-minute shooting rampage from the observation deck of the university. He was shot and killed by police. He had earlier murdered his wife and mother at their homes. It was the deadliest shooting on a U.S. college campus until the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

What a weird post. Seems like total projection.
Who do you think raised the single young men? The people I was talking about.

They played LSU in September after that shooting happened in April. Their fans were pretty somber and their team seemed like they were never in game, even from the beginning.
I felt bad for those folks and was glad they ended up a Top 10 team.
