I adopted my dogs for $3000 from a breeder. Didn't have to go through any interviews either to see if I was a good fit. Here's the money, gimme the dog.
Maybe if they wouldn't be such hardasses about adopting they wouldn't have so many dogs to adopt

Nah, those people are nuts. But they do pull the most adoptable pets from other local shelters so they're probably your best bet to find a golden.
Use Petfinder. You will have to wait to find a golden puppy but it will cost closer to $200-300.

sounds like you're fixed on a puppy
But FYI for others, there are organizations that bring in goldens from Turkey and China regularly, and often they're only a couple of years old. Apparently they're popular and frequently abandoned.

If you want a quality Golden puppy that'll be a good house dog, rather than a hunting dog, Lynne Briggs of Memphis is a very high quality breeder. It'll be a while before you can get a puppy, though, because I think she only does two litters per year. My sister has gotten three Goldens from her. None of them have had any of the typical Golden health problems that can crop up from irresponsible breeding.

I paid 1500 for my English golden last year. They aren't cheap.

I bought a puppy from them and he was a wonderful guy, my favorite dog ever, but he was saddled with multiple serious health problems his whole life. TERRIBLE allergies, hot spots, major illness, bad hips, bad eyes. Those dogs are gorgeous but the health issues aren't fair to the dog or the owner.

I’ve lived with goldens my entire life and we don’t have any of the high maintenance issues you described.

We found a breeder in the country that gave us a fair price on a white Lab from the AKC Marketplace. He's a beautiful, calm dog and we have full breeding rights with his registration. We would have paid over $1500 locally but we got our fella for $500. We did have to drive to Florence, AL to pick him up but that was a fun trip for our family.

If you balk at sales price and find a "deal" you may end up paying way more later. Hip issues, epilepsy, etc.

You’re right. But someone who’s already worried about money with a pet will probably use the same excuse later on. See it all the time.

Yes and no. A poorly bred dog or one that’s overly inbred can present recessive genes which make it more prone to having Additional issues.
But certain breeds are more likely to have their own set of issues.

We did our research. Found a semi breeder in Texas who shows her goldens and only breeds with other show dogs. They (show owners in general) are very protective of the breed and do a lot to make sure the puppies do not become part of mills and can be taken care of appropriately. You get at least 5 generations of history with the full medical histories. These show owners also despise designer breeds because they’re done with typically a singular goal in mind, usually minis and shedless doodles. These breeders don’t really care about the health of the breed/dog and are just looking to turn out as many puppies as possible for profits. Hunnington is the perfect example and the health of those dogs shows it.
