I’m looking to purchase a golden retriever puppy without paying an arm and a leg. I’m not worried about it having papers or not, but I would prefer them. All of the ones I’ve seen on google are north of $2000. Any help is greatly appreciated

Sounds fair. Gold is like $2,035 per ounce

Are you looking for one that plays football or one that plays basketball?

If you’re looking to buy a dog you can maybe breed, you’re gonna pay out the arse. If you agree to spay or neuter it shouldn’t be that expensive all things considered.

Yep that's what you gonna pay for one out of a breeder. You might find one on Craigslist for cheaper.

Paid $2000 for a white goldendoodle and $1000 for a Dutch shepardoodle a few months back.

Don’t get a dog if you don’t have the money to take proper care of it. There are enough shitty dog owners out there.

Dogs aren’t cheap. And I’m not just talking up front. Goldens aren’t like labs that can eat almost anything and never need anything more than a bath. They get allergies. They need to be groomed often. They shed a ton. They need a specific diet. If you’re not prepared to spend 2k at the start, you probably shouldn’t get one at all.

My advice is to adopt.

Don’t go though some cheep breeder. They’ll be inbreed and end up having a lot of problems

Not paying greater than 2 grand for a dog doesn’t mean he can’t properly take care of it.

Goldens have gotten insanely popular in recent years, not surprised that they are that high.

I'd be willing to bet if you looked through online Humane Society websites in the regional area, you could find a dog that is essentially a golden with some other stuff mixed in for free if you are balking at that price.

If you want a pure golden puppy - you are gonna pay a lot. I'd guess $1,500 absolute minimum.

ETA: If you balk at sales price and find a "deal" you may end up paying way more later. Hip issues, epilepsy, etc.

Another idea would be to look at adoption websites - you have to have a fence and go through a more intense placement search. But i know there are a lot of adoption services for german shepherds and other type big dogs that owners simply couldn't handle and had to give up. Not sure if one exists for Golden's but definitely a cheaper route to go if you don't care getting a dog that is 1 year old +.

some place like this

Look in Hoobly.com. That's where we found Eli a year ago.

Rescue a mutt: odds are it will be among the smartest dogs you’ve ever known, not to mention the best friend you’ll ever have...

we adopted one through a shelter in BR. not sure if if it's 100% pure but typical golden. great temperament, great with kids, and chews on everything.

if it's just going to be a family pet(not used for a specific purpose like hunting), adopt one.

Rhonda’s retrivers near Meridian, more hunting oriented smaller dogs, one of the best I have ever had, not heard of others being dissatisfied, but research them.

Goldens can have a lot of medical issues. You’re more than likely either going to pay for it on the front or back end. Buy one with all the medical clearances and if something major happens you have the breeder to fall back on. That is if you buy from a reputable breeder and not someone’s cousin Johnny who is on his 7th litter from the same female in the last 4 yrs.
