always take the overnight Amtrak from ATL to NYC if I'm headed up there. 16 hour ride with a bedroom on the train and eat dinner and breakfast in the diner. It drops you off at Penn Station which is right smack dab in the middle of Manhattan, and you can either walk or hop right on the ABC or 123.

This is a fantastic idea, until you hit a 24 hour delay like amtrack is routinely known for.

JFK jet blue terminal is disgusting.

Birds live all inside it, and there’s bird shite all over the place. Don’t eat/drink at the open air bars in it. Bird droppings all over the glassware etc

Also, a majority of the seating has old bird shite stains deeply imbedded

LGA sucks. And I can't believe there isn't more public transit tying the airport to the city.

Only flown their twice but both times there were 100+ taxis lined up outside the baggage claim. Maybe i just caught them at a good time

I only fly in and out of Newark. Security sucks and there is always a wait, but the train to Penn Station is a great deal and convenient.

I’ve only been to LaGuardia on a lay over. I liked the terminals honestly.

I always fly into Newark and take the train to Penn station. Easy peesey.

Best advice from native new yorkers I received. They told me to always do this until the LGA renovations are done. It used to be OK before construction started, it will be OK when its done. right now is a shitshow.

If you're staying downtown you simply switch trains to the PATH at Newark Penn station.

Mid town or uptown stay on to Penn Station under Msg.

16 hour train ride or three hour flight and twenty minute train ride?
I'll take the latter.

I was in Tokyo last week. It’s amazing how organized and well managed their airport and public transit systems are. 36M people in metro Tokyo and they somehow manage to keep everything spotless as well.

This is one thing 1000+ year enforced cultural hegemony can give you.

Worth it. Everyone was also absolutely silent on the trains. No NYC subway creatures trying to rob, sing, dance or beg. No one talking to themselves. Seemingly 0 homeless people. Everyone seemed to have a few bucks in their pocket and had on a decent pair of clothes. It was remarkable.

100 yard runway doesn't help either.

Pro tip: Always rent a limo in NYC. $50 to $70 Reserve a day ahead. Driver meets you & carries your bags. If you offer to share it with a fellow passenger on your plane, it costs less than a taxi.

And Newark is the most hassle-free airport.

You forgot to mention that LGA is in the middle of an $8 billion renovation. Construction has everything messed up right now.

Not only that, flights all throughout the NE were canceled and delayed July 6-7 due to weather causing an influx in late evening arrivals.

I live in NYC and fly in/out of LGA as much as possible despite being on the west side, which is a little closer to Newark.

Delta dumped a lot of cash into the airport, so they are building a new terminal. Unfortunately they won't be building new runways so the delays will persist.

The runways aren't the source of delays, the airspace is. You have LGA, EWR, JFK, and TEB all in close proximity and each has a plethora of arrival and departure fixes with traffic that needs to be separated.

Until the federal government fully implements NextGen, you won't be seeing any improvement in the NE corridor.

LGA is a shithole. So are JFK and Newark.

Arrange a car before getting to LGA. Get a taxi to take you back. Easiest way really.
LGA also best for midtown and Up. Newark sucks balls for a lot of reasons, but if you take the LIRR into Penn you have to get out and transfer to get anywhere else. IDK, plus Penn always reeks of Hobo piss and desperate Knicks fans.

LaGuardia looked like Sudan when I was there last. Our uber driver tried to drop us off a quarter of a mile from our checkin.

Also, if anyone wants to laugh at my pain:

Last time we went to NYC, I was dealing with the SO and totally scatterbrained by the time we got to the train to get into the city. I bought us a metro card and then after, I couldn't get through the gate. I was trying to go into the "exit" and wasted over $20 trying to get through.

Yep, NOLA and like the Atl trip, just never gone further. Would like it but not feasible for business-related travel for me.

If I ever decide to go back to work on my dissertation I'm taking a month to write and take the train all over the country solo. Might invite the family to meet me in different spots on the weekend, maybe.
