Should be well-versed with how to handle gunshot victims by the time you are done there. Other than that?

All jokes aside.
Find good secure parking. Unless you want to be replacing windows every other week.
Carefully chose where you live.
And yes. Buy a gun. Learn to use it. Better safe than sorry.
New Orleans would be a blast for a couple years. Then you probably want to move on.

My brother went to LSU med school. He got robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight walking to the parking lot on (near) Perdido St from class one afternoon in 1983. shite happens in the city. But he only got robbed once.

The good news is that a ton of ghetto was demolished to build UMC and the VA hospital after Katrina. The area around there is much nicer now, but still in the city.

Best and simplest advice is to always keep ya head on a swivel. Always be aware of your surroundings, whether it be pumping gas, going in or out a store, talking a walk, etc. it’s a shame we have to do this, but that’s what we’re faced with now. I used to think there were certain areas better than others, but like Clarence Buggs always says, it’s just a matter of time, and it’s “coming to a neighborhood near you!”
Good luck with it, and good luck with school.

Well its certainly not Wacko....

You will be just like all the med school grads in 4 years fighting to get a job in town rather than have to go somewhere else.

Jefferson Parish, without question.

I grew up in NOLA and only when I moved out did I realize what a dung heap the place is. I was there for a wedding last year, only left my hotel twice for a quick run to Walgreen’s and then the liquor store, witnessed a crime both times. If you’re curious, one was a kid who stole everything off the top shelf at the liquor store, the other one was an old guy who couldn’t pay for his vodka so he took it and through it against the wall, shattering everywhere.

When they ask you, "Where you got your shoes?"

The answer is, "On my feet."

LSU Health? Stay on campus. Students die commuting. Imagine being on the cusp of graduating only to die in an car accident caused by a 75 IQ driver.
