Given the situation I don't think any reasonable person will assume anything negative about wearing a mask. Prior to this you probably would just because it was socially out of the norm.. either something was wrong with you or you were about to do something bad.
Americans (europeans too) look so people's mouths a lot for communication and expression, so wearing a mask creeps us out more than most Asian cultures that look at eyes for expression.

If you don’t want us to stereotype all black men in masks as criminals then start talking to blacks on why they are prone to crime at a staggering rate.
