Have you just realized that the news and especially this board overhypes the hell out of every weather event?

Every rainstorm is a monsoon.

Every gust of wind is a hurricane.

You weren’t a kid in and around 05, were you?.

Overhyped or not, but what happens whenever meteorologists and others don’t talk about this with a sense of urgency?

You start having people not listen. You start having people that don’t care. You start having people not evacuating if need be. What happens when there is a terrible storm approaching and make landfall? You start having people hurt and dead.

Katrina is responsible for the hypersensitivity. People didn’t listen. People didn’t care. People died and one of the most sad and depressing situations I’ve ever seen in my life.

Good on everyone at the NWS, NHC, here...wherever on making sure people are alert. Because complacency can and will absolutely kill you.

It’s following the Mississippi River, which is already high, the entire way up. Meaning the river will constantly get rain and flow down to Louisiana.

Go look at the current levels of the Amite and comite rivers right now. If they were swollen from all these alleged rivers in Pennsylvania and Minnesota and up north like that guy was saying, then the Amite and comite rivers would be at flood stage already and would have been at flood stage for months like the Mississippi River.

The Mississippi River is the only river that is at flood stage right now around BR because of runoff from up north. Can’t you fricking see that there is no correlation. THERE IS NO CONNECTION. Look at the fricking river stage maps. It doesn’t make sense

You’re paying attention to what’s going on around you, aren’t you?

Goal achieved.

I thought that from the beginning. It’s their job to hype these storms up as the worst case scenario. I figured it wouldn’t be much. I don’t blame the people who prepared for the worst though.

Am I crazy or does anyone else feel the same way?

Hurricanes and Tropical Storms are 24/7 news network wet dreams. They always overhype. Occasionally they under-hype (Katrina) but since then they tend to exaggerate the risk for ratings. I'm glad you Louisiana guys and gals are looking better. That is great but from Cantore to WAFB, the shite is over-hyped. Better to be over prepared and frustrated than under-prepared and wet.

People didn’t care or listen to the forecasts for Katrina not because the news reports didn’t hype it enough, but because the news reports had over-hyped many previous storms.

Many people have seen the reports this week, and done massive preparations and evacuated. Many hours of labor and much money is being spent to get out of the way of this storm. If nothing big happens, the next time similar forecasts are made, the same people will be less likely to spend the money and effort doing the same.

Right or wrong, that’s just human nature.

re: Katrina. How do you over hype a Cat4 that turned into a Cat5 barreling towards NOLA? People, just like my parents, had been lulled into a false sense of security because of so many non-events. Katrina was the ONLY storm my parents evacuated for in 30+ years and they had to be begged to less than 24 hours before it hit. My mom literary came to my house in BR with a toothbrush and a grocery bag with 1 change of clothes because she was "going home the next day"

Ps they never returned home to Lake Terrace...ever.

I understand that, but the fault won’t lie on public officials and media. That’s their job to have folks prepared. Information is passed on. It’s up to the public how to process it. Preparation MUST be handled this way regardless if people dislike it or not.

Who’s fault is that though?

If you have to BEG someone to leave, that’s borderline ridiculous. Regardless if you try to prepare so many times before.

With all due respect to his mother, it’s on her for not being educated on the situation and not keeping a very close eye on a massive CAT5 hurricane the size of the GoM barreling towards Louisiana.

I get what you are saying. A Cat 5 churning out in the Gulf would have me scurrying around as well. Barry isn’t even a hurricane and the people around me are so scarred from the 2016 flood that they have packed up their homes, moved all of their vehicles, and evacuated out of state. If serious damage doesn’t happen, the next storm that enters the Gulf will be less likely to get the same response as this one.

So you’re telling me that rivers all the way from Minnesota and Pennsylvania and wherever the frick else are somehow connected to and flow into the Amite, tickfaw and comite rivers? GTFO. The rivers have been low lately except for the MS river.

YES, that’s exactly what I’m saying.

I’ll give helping/educating you another shot. The Miss River starts at Lake Itasca in MINNESOTA. The Ohio River (nearly 1000 miles) which starts in PENNSYLVANIA and ends when it merges with the Mississippi River in Illinois. YES, the rain that fell in Minnesota and Pennsylvania a month or two ago has now traveled 2000+/- miles down the Ohio and Miss Rivers into Baton Rouge.

The Miss River averages about 2 mph for 2000 miles. That means it takes about 1000 hours. 1000/24= about 41 days. Could be more, could be less. It’s just science and math, but it might be too much for you to understand though.

CONCLUSION: The rain and melt from Minnesota and Pennsylvania that flooded multiple states in the Spring has been recently/is now reaching Baton Rouge and caused/is causing the Miss River to rise. No matter how much rain Baton Rouge experienced recently, the Miss River was going to rise. Local rain obviously affects the Miss River too, so when you throw 10 inches of rain in a short time on top of that already high water, the risk was/is there for flooding.

***To answer your question on the other rivers.. They will only flood because large volumes of rain in the Miss/La area. They have been down lately because of the weather in Miss/La.

The Tickfaw River starts Mississippi and is NOT fed by anything up north. It’s about 100 miles long and dumps into Lake Maurepas. The only way it floods is a large volume of local rain recently.

The Comite River is about 50 miles long and is NOT fed by any rivers from up north. The only way it will flood is heavy local rain. It feeds directly into the Amite River.

The Amite River starts in Mississippi (120 miles long) and is NOT fed by rivers from up north. If there is no substantial rain in La/Miss, it won’t flood. If that area gets a lot of rain fast, it will flood like hell as you guys have seen.

Good luck to all of you in the affected areas. Praying for y’all and good luck!
