I am a pharmacist making 150k. My salary was dropped last week (along with everyone else’s) from 185k. Another drop is coming and maybe the it drops to zero. I’ve been studying the job market for months and the salaries are getting really low for a 6 to 8 year degree. The writing is on the wall. I’m sick of standing up and grinding all day getting interrupted 3000k times a day. It’s very robotic and unsatisfying.
So, you lose $150k a year for three years ($450k), plus pay for school at least $100k (in state LSU caliber price). You are out $550k. ($100k more if you have to pay interest on student loans after you finish).
You do a residency for 3 years at $60k a year (so losing another $90k a year for three years). So, in those six years your net income is $820k less than it would be if you kept working for 6 years. Plus you may be strapped with SL interest.
You’d have to work at 250k a year for 8 years just to break even. At that point you are 60.
Not sure it’s worth it, but only you can decide that, because it’s more than about money. Just know all jobs are shite to some extent. Same circus, different clowns.
Have you looked at smaller non-big box chain pharmacies? I have a friend that left CVS for a small compounding pharmacy and LOVES it. Actually feels like she’s using her degree and education instead of pursuing unrealistic and wacky big box chain policies and quotas.

Excellent financial analysis......when you add it up in black and white it is impactful
ETA
I still think if it is a calling for you that is more valuable

Concerned. Nah. I’m only concerned for the OP who said if he gets enough upvotes he’ll go to med school. I just think it’s a dumb thread. If you’re 46 and applying to med school wtf would you post this on the OT. At 46 you don’t need validation from an online forum.

I’ll allow it
ETA clearly I have no right to allow or disallow anything

Hell, you should reverse the whip and work for a PBM as a clinical manager or Pharm D. They make easy 6 figs and work remote. I worked for AdvancePCS, CaremarkPCS and CVS Caremark for years. Check out what some of the PBMs have before leaping.
Any way I can get in on this with an art degree at 52 years old?
Asking for a friend....

I got a little aggressive. Cheers

I know several people who went that route and found it far more fulfilling and intellectually engaging than reporting to district managers. Not to mention it opens up other career opportunities.

If you want to do it, then do it. If you don’t you will regret it. Good luck and study hard.

The grass may not be greener.
I’m a doctor and all I think about is retiring.

If you’ve got the money to pay for it sure why not. No way in hell I’d rack up a ton of debt to pay for it at your age though

Shakespearean level quote.
Medicine is not special.
I’ve practiced for 30 years and I’ve enjoyed some great moments, but most of it is like any other job. You will have to deal with a moron somewhere in the system who can destroy your workflow with paperwork.
Most days I come home and when asked,”how was your day“, I say, “I’m one day closer to retirement.”

What reason do they give for reducing your compensation? Are you still doing the same job / working the same hours?
