So does a pharmacy undergrad from 1996 really propel you to a 3 year med school these days?

Are you a pharmacist now? Def do it if you can see yourself going through the next 8 to 10 years at a pay decrease. The upside after is high as long as you don’t immediately buy a $2M house the minute you get a position out of residency. Never too late to do what you want

Starting to practice at 55?...yeah, good decision.

3 years condensed program
1 year internship
Maybe I can swing it
Or
3 year family practice residency

52 at the worse case scenario.

Good luck!

Where are you applying? MD or DO? What speciality are you aiming for?

My wife is at one of the Northwestern Medicine hospitals. I can attest that the road to this point was long and bumpy, but she loves it.

The PBMs are monopolistic thieves that were empowered by Obamacare. We provide a service and get robbed after the fact.

It doesn’t sound fancy but I want to treat opioid use disorder in an office based setting. It’s a Great business model. A friend of mine does it and he makes 250k working 4 days a week.

Hell, you should reverse the whip and work for a PBM as a clinical manager or Pharm D. They make easy 6 figs and work remote. I worked for AdvancePCS, CaremarkPCS and CVS Caremark for years. Check out what some of the PBMs have before leaping.

A lot of family med and internal med residents moonlight at those Suboxone clinics. You are correct that the comp is very good.

It’s great to see people wanting to make a dent in that in some way.

That’s why I asked if you’re a pharmacist. Sometimes if you add up years lost and added debt, a $250k salary may not make up for it. But if it’s what you are interested in, that’s more valuable

I’m sure your intentions are good here. But, ironic that Doctors profited by overprescribing opioids, thereby creating a new specialty for doctors to profit off of a problem created by opioid addiction.

I am a pharmacist making 150k. My salary was dropped last week (along with everyone else’s) from 185k. Another drop is coming and maybe the it drops to zero.

I’ve been studying the job market for months and the salaries are getting really low for a 6 to 8 year degree. The writing is on the wall.

I’m sick of standing up and grinding all day getting interrupted 3000k times a day. It’s very robotic and unsatisfying.

Which school has a condensed 3 year program? I’ve never heard of such a thing. Sounds interesting.

I hate to say this, but that sounds pretty much like being an MD (I’m not an MD, just reporting from my friends and family that are). I still say go for it though!

You need to do what you feel is the right decision for you (and your family). I got into medicine after working as an engineer for a few years. It’s definitely something that can be done a with a little age and wisdom, and having the experiences that go with being a 46yo and a prior career as a pharmacist will elevate you above your peers. I am happy with my career, but it’s the Bataan Death March. I would not encourage my family or friends to become a physician. The juice just isn’t worth the squeeze.

I’m saying this so that you know what you’re asking for: if you can imagine doing anything else with your life that will make you happy, then do that. I would encourage you to look strongly at becoming a physicians assistant (and specifically at anesthesiologist assistant with your pharm background). You can get your degree much quicker for MUCH cheaper, practice sooner with little (or no) liability with lots of opportunities to specialize if you so choose, earn excellent pay with better work/life balance, and hospital systems are bending over backwards get you and keep you.

If you absolutely must be the captain of the ship, go all the way and get the MD, but realize what you and those around you are giving up to get there.
