FWIW 121M is roughly 46% of the monthly spend in Texas on uninsured care

Illegal immigrants definitely receive free medical care
I do part time work at a safety net hospital.
Many of the Hispanic patients I have treated or operated on have been lost to follow up. No number to call. No email. No address. They are just gone.
I had a daughter of a patient email me telling me her father was deported.
You have absolutely no idea how many of these people receive free medical care. They do not pay.
The bill gets passed on to the American Taxpayer.
Full stop.

That is a shitty poster. It's not 121 mil for illegals. The first comment calls him out and he doesn't dispute it lol

No one is debating that.

Yes, and it should stop. But it's not 121 mil either. This is just a grifter spreading fake news

If they are getting Medicaid, it sounds like a Texas problem. The undocumented cannot receive Medicare as per federal law.

I'm 100% convinced that a vast majority of my Door Dash lunch deliverers and Lyft drivers did not emigrate to our Great Nation thru the proper, legal means...
That shite pisses me the frick off...

So Texas gave away $1B+ in Medcaid services to illegal immigrants in 2024, and nobody said a word until now?
Maybe that’s because there’s a different administration now?

Right logic wrong conclusion. Texas started requiring hospitals to report this quarterly so they could bill/sue the Biden administration for the cost. We only just started to see the reports, but something tells me Texas won't bill/sue the Trump administration but would have if Harris got elected.

$25 million not $122 million also hospitals cant just turn away patients.

He's just regurgitating a stupid tweet that's not even factual. But as long as it fits his narrative it's ok to lie

That’s with reimbursement by federal money, but in emergency situations including the illegals coming here to give birth to a US citizen the ERs have to treat them. Sometimes these will be covered by medicaid when actually an emergency. Some areas have taxes to basically help with write offs not reimbursed to avoid losing hospitals or ERs due to uninsured and/or illegals, and I am sure accepted and negotiated hospital rates are set to cover most of the rest. Everything becomes an emergency to be seen and then treated in the ER.
The recently passed law will not change the emergency treatment requirements. It’s will limit valid and legal federal Medicaid reimbursement for the states that use their state funds to cover illegals under medicaid for non-emergency healthcare.
quote:
Under the law, undocumented immigrants may only access federal benefits that are deemed necessary to protect life or guarantee safety in dire situations, such as emergency Medicaid, access to treatment in hospital emergency rooms, or access to healthcare and nutrition programs under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). order to be eligible for these emergency services, undocumented immigrants need to meet all of Medicaid’s other nonfinancial and financial eligibility requirements.
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) ensures that all patients regardless of citizenship or immigration status have access to emergency medical treatment. The purpose of EMTALA is to ensure all Medicare-participating hospitals do not to turn away individuals who need lifesaving care. Undocumented immigrants use of EMTALA-related services is often covered via emergency Medicaid.
The state is not getting reimbursed the entire $121 million thru medicaid as much of it ends up not being true emergencies, but hospitals also don’t really lose all of what’s not reimbursed or covered under emergency medicaid coverage as mentioned above.
The statement was more about what illegals healthcare is costing Texans and Texas hospitals one way or the other.

Yeah, I find it disturbing that a lot of posters are showing little concern for the amount of free healthcare that is being handed out.

I work in emergency medicine in Texas and this definitely tracks with what I see. Obviously lots of Mexicans but I’ve also been seeing tons of Venezuelans. Unfortunately it’s a massive time sink because the visits are through a translator phone and take 3x a normal encounter, and usually for some primary care bullshite.
Our registration people have to ask patients if they are here legally and they can just lie so this is obviously underreported if anything.
A slight correction to the headline is that this is not Medicaid funding this but usually hospitals just taking a big L. Only about 20 million is paid for by Medicaid, the rest is unpaid care that is just never reimbursed.
Frankly the government should be reimbursing hospitals since this care is forced on us and we can’t say no. EMTALA is the largest ever unfunded government mandate and needs to be reformed.

If that was done away with, cost of care would possibly drop 30%
