Good deal- it will outlive you.

Several years ago I bought a 2007 for $20k. Put 180k miles on it in 5 years without any repairs and sold it for $13k.

Why do YOU have to get her a car? You could give her a loan and or co-sign.

She's 16 and doesn't even have a job yet. I don't mind helping my kids as long as they are decent kids and make good grades. We aren't buying her an Audi

We're giving her a 10 yr old Accord as her first car that's been paid off for probably 6 years. It's not really worth that much to us.

Why do YOU care?

eta: there's always some old economy steve in these threads. how is the average suburban kid a) going to get to work to pay for a car b)be able to save enough to buy something that's not a total POS?

Supporting you is this graph from Manheim, which tracks trends in used car pricing. Year over year prices are down nearly 14%, nearly 16% in some categories.

Do manufacturers have insurance on warranty’s and recalls? I would think warranties and recalls has a lot to do with price also along with dealerships bending people over.

Yep. These are the folks that are remembering the good old days where they paid $5k for a decent vehicle.
I’m not wasting money on some piece of crap for my kid. If he was just driving it a few miles to a school close to home and maybe to a movie theatre, I guess it could be considered, but that’s not how our life works. I also want something that he can take to college in a few years

When it comes to your trade, the market has improved so the dealer cant offer you as much.

When it comes to your new car purchase, the market has not improved, so MSRP is best we can do.

Realistically it’s got to get him through college. 2-3 yrs of high school and 4 or so years of college…

It just happens that my wife has an old car right now and it makes sense to just get her something else. I'll let her drive this in high school and if she messes it up we won't be out much.

I'll probably get her something a little newer for college and after that she can get her own.

Yeah, we're planning on giving my wife's car to our grand daughter, and buying another.

How?

Defaults. They sold at outrageously high prices and now many that would buy cars are upside down. Selling above MSRP is going to come back to haunt them. In addition to falling used car prices, interest rates on new cars and slowing demand are going to hurt. Sales people will be let go in the first 6-9 months of the year. Consumers will not forget charging in excess of MSRP either. That is going to cost customers from returning. It was a short term successful strategy that is going to hurt them in the long run.

Higher rates, supply coming back on line after semiconductor shortage, slowing economy and customers that are upside down and overextended on their loans is a recipe for a dismal year.

My Hyundai Sonata is 11 years old with about 160,000 miles now so I'll be in the market for a new/used car very soon. I'll probably hold out for another year or two when the prices hopefully go down.

I’m probably going to back out of putting in another deposit, already have one in locally, for the sure thing out of St Louis. The add-on options don’t piss me off, but $1,100 delivery processing and handling, $2,250 MSRP markup, $499 document fee…having to get a plane ticket to get it, still to pay taxes and registration crap here…I’ll be over $38k on a $31k car. For a 16 yr old…I’m out.

Hope so. Will be in the market for a car for 16 year old this calendar year... yikes.

You would buy a brand new vehicle for a 16 yr old?

Didn't say I would, the title of the thread says new/used. And technically, I am not buying this car, he will have at least $10k saved up, and I'll pitch in. He's a good kid, makes excellent grades, and we frankly need a 3rd driver.

He will spend another summer at the farm, and I am honestly kinda hoping we can snag a truck or little GMC SUV for a good price from the folks. Dad is looking to start scaling back the farm, and I'd be happy cleaning up a vehicle and painting it.
