If your house/plumbing can’t handle a few days of freeze, you need to call your builder

Same thing happened where I am in Dallas a few years ago. Snow and freeze for several days led to lots of busted pipes and people with roof damage etc…. Everyone got mad at the state/local government but it’s not their fault the contractors who built the houses did a shitty job.

If someone builds a house that can’t stand up to basic natural events (not hurricanes, tornados, etc.), that person should lose their liscence.

It’s ridiculous that “nice” houses are built that can’t handle a few days in a row of temperatures in the 20’s, regardless of where they are built, that’s irresponsible.

The people who try the snow in their attics were the most perplexing to me.

Not really. Up north they have different building standards. The lines are built below the frost line which is several feet below ground. Historically would’ve seem like a waste of money to build to those standards in the south. Plus, a lot of them have basements, which help prevent pipes from the house from cracking cracking.

Sorry, unless you moved in to the build less than 12ish months from when the builder finished it, and the freeze occurred, you won't have much, if any recourse. All the builders we've had called around 10.5 months (Texas) and reminded me to make a list of anything that needed to be fixed before the warranty period was over.

Idk.

When I lived in GA all the houses had basements with plumbing inside.

In LA I have only lived in raised houses with the pipes exposed.

Your sentence should have ended with a period.

Insulation only buys time. It will not prevent freezing. The better the R value the more time you have. But the temperature difference will also speed up the time to freeze.

So extreme cold for extended periods will eventually beat the insulation.

Yeah! I was reared in North Louisiana. Didn't have indoor plumbing so there was no problem when it snowed about 10" in the early fifties.
I've lived in East TN for about fifty years. I don't remember ever having a frozen pipe. I wrapped outdoor faucets with Bubble wrap the other day, prior to the freeze. Its finally above freezing, after about of week of sub 32 degrees.
If pipes have frozen, the leaks will be a mess. However a section of PVC pipe and a can of PVC glue will take care of it.
If folks don't know how to handle it, google "PVC pipe repair". Its simple. Even a college student can do it.

It's real simple.

Pluming that comes from the street and up through the center of the house and emanates outward to the rooms that need water, have no issues with frozen pipes.

Pluming that comes from the street and up to the house from the perimeter of the house to the rooms that needs water, like many southern home builds, are going to have a much better chance of frozen pipes.

I lived in GA for 7 years and I can attest to this. Main line came from the street and into the basement and from center of the basement the pipe distributed to each bathroom and kitchen. We had many weeks where is did not get above freezing. No issues.

Gotta wrap them with thermal tape then insulate.
