Colorado could be great and others on list also in right situation.

Something like an affordable spot an hour or so outside of somewhere like Barcelona would allow easy travel to numerous European cities. At 42, that would be a big plus. Old enough to fully appreciate while young enough to have energy to live it up.

My father retired at 50 - a boomer FIRE before FIRE was a thing. That sob invested more money when the market would tank. The smartest man I've ever known and never saw a college until his sons went. His carpentry skills are beyond my comprehension.

If you're retiring at 42, that's awesome. I found I need to be productive to society and am not my father. I get bored, when I get bored I become destructive to myself.

The Texas Hill country is where I would move too. I’ve hunted there my whole life I love the area. It’s quiet and has some pretty land.

Spent a lot of time riding and camping around Leakey, Hondo, Kerrville. Love it down there but haven't been back in a few years and heard it's getting expensive and crowded.

Was camping out there Memorial Day of 2015 when the big floods hit. I had no cell phone signal, one of the longest nights of my life. When it dried out enough the next day and I got to a gas station had probably 40 missed calls and texts everyone thought I was dead.

Went to buc-ees. Excellent coffee.

For the benefits?

Thought of working an entry level job at an airline for same thing.

Looking at google maps, Leakey and Hondo aren’t crowded. A lot of acreage around there. It’s 50 miles from Leakey down to Hondo. No straight shot the roads all twist and turn.

Income tax does not matter if retired.

Social Security will likely be taxable income.

401k and IRA withdrawals are taxable income (except Roth IRAs.

Income taxes matter in retirement if you hold most of your money in 401k or an IRA.

I prefer Brownsville, but that's not in Hill Country.

Retire in that I'm just going to work whatever I feel like to keep from getting bored.
