If pediatrics, she will be working at Levine Children's Hospital. Probably more pathology there as opposed to Children's in New Orleans. It's a relatively new building too, and super nice. I know some of the pediatric oncologists there and a good friend of mine's wife is a pediatric nephrologist. Not sure what specialty/fellowship she is looking at, but it's a solid pediatric program, and I don't think anyone has much trouble getting the fellowships that they want.

Birmingham. Avoid Charlotte. If you must live here then buy in South Carolina. NC will kill you on taxes, auto insurance, gas prices and car inspections. It sucks here.

Public transit is lacking, low crime is inaccurate (look it up), schools suck (Char-Meck is really weak and an abortion), bowl game with plenty of empty seats and Charleston is great bit the beaches aren't.

Charlotte slight edge over
Birmingham
Nola - great city don't get me wrong. Just wouldn't want to live there. Its like Vegas to me.
Birmingham is a fun city but better for having a serious girlfriend or raising a family. Although since many of the bars are open all night it can be a fun town to party in.
Charlotte is a much better swinging city for young single people with disposable income. But then again if that is what you want go to New York, San Fran or Atlanta.

Married with no kids?
NOLA all day long.
Charlotte
Birmingham.
Birmingham is nice in the southern part around the mountains, but you are still talking about strip malls and chain restaurants - just of a nicer variety. It is relatively boring, which is good if you have kids. But, without kids, I'd go New Orleans.

Love B'ham. Came here 11.5 years ago from LA for residency and never left.
Mnt Brook, Vestavia, and Hwood all good.
UAB is good stuff.

NOLA.
All three have similar issues (high cost of living, traffic, etc.)
Birmingham is lousy with gumps so it would be my last choice of the three

Let me refresh your memory of the "good old days"...

Congrats on the spot on description of Birmingham circa 2000. The beer scene there is exceptional with several local breweries and bars downtown amongst lots of local restaurants. There aren't many cities in the country that compare to the New Orleans food scene, but I feel pretty confident in saying that Birmingham is one of the better food cities in the South. Yes, it's definitely a very preppy town with an obsession for college football in general.
Birmingham metro is one of the most underrated cities in the South IMO. Whenever I was in town with people I work with, they were always shocked at how pretty much the are was from a scenery standpoint. They usually expect a flat uninteresting place like Baton Rouge or Montgomery, not hills and small mountains.
As someone that has lived in both Bham (Mtn Brook) and Charlotte (Dilworth), I preferred Birmingham.

Cities in the SouthEast that blow BHM out of the water.
I'll just start with a quick list.:
NOLA, Tampa, Nashville, ATL, Charleston, MIA, Memphis
Cities about or equal: Jackson, LR, BR.....

Some of these comparisons are a bit ridiculous, especially comparing Miami to Birmingham. I would say that Madrid and Paris blow NOLA out of the water type shite.
It all depends on what floats your boat I suppose. I think NOLA (as a single person), Nashville, and Charleston are all definitely places that I would love to live.
I despise Atlanta and Memphis. Haven't been to Tampa enough to make a judgement. Jackson and Little Rock, both places I have spent months at a time, are worse than Birmingham IMO.
My parents live in Baton Rouge and it's without a doubt the worst city on the entire list you posted though.

Thats exactly the kind of info wanted to hear Ric. It's absolutely ridiculous that you go through this whole process and rarely get any real objective information.
You're committing yourself to 3-6 years of your life based on a 1 day interview and a guess. Crazy.
