Also, over/under how many atomic bombs would have been dropped? After the success of the first two, I don't think the US would have hesitated dropping them as quick as they can make them in the world of 1945/1946/1947.
I haven’t bothered to look it up but decades ago I remember reading that it would have taken months for us to build and deploy a third nuclear bum after the second one that was used on Nagasaki.

They were each one offs (the two that we used were pretty different designs from each other). Obviously we’d have been able to to do so before the end of calendar ‘45.

The next time we detonated an nuclear device was the plutonium bomb at Bikini atoll (again dropped from a B-29) in July of ‘46 called Operation Crossroads.

We had 1 more after Japan surrendered. The Demon Core.

There is actually a YouTube video discussing what would’ve happened if Russia kept going after Berlin and they would’ve had success at 1st but Patton would’ve driven them out of France & Germany

Quickly. The US supplied much of the Soviets logistics. Take that away, and they’re toast.

Part of the problem with your scenario is Japan and the fighting we were still doing in Asia. Also Great Britain was already stretched on production and manpower it could supply. In WWI they could rely heavily on troops from India. By WWII and all that had happened in India with Gandhi and the Independence movement, India was no longer a reliable source.

There was about 7 years when the U.S. could have conquered the world easily.

How many other nations do you think would not have taken advantage of that. I wager that we are the only ones that would have showed that level of restraint.

Many of us on this board may not be here today had we taken this step!

Pretty much this. The country was sick of war by that point.

Immediately after VE Day? The Soviet meat grinder likely would have continued on into Paris.

After VJ Day? Potentially the US wins if it can generate more nukes to use to threaten Moscow and several other key cities.

The Russians may be able to disassemble industry and move it across the Urals but nuking their oil reserves or port cities like Leningrad and ones in the Crimea would have fricked them long term.

My grandfather was there, I posted the text of his letter describing it on this board some time ago.

Edit: Text Below (This was a love letter sent by my 18-year old Grandpa to my eventual Grandma, coincidentally he was at Bikiki Atoll for the bomb tests - misspellings are his).

quote:

3 July, 1946

I got your letter this afternoon plus the picture and needless to say, I was glad to get them both. The picture looks to me like one of those you gettaken on the street when you arnt expecting it but judging from the smiles I kinda sorta think you were. I don’t exactly recognize the location except it looks to me like it was taken somewhere in the loop. Like when I was in Pearl I had some pictures taken on the base and also on liberty at Waikiki beach but alas-alak, they havent been developed yet. Reds has the film (it was his camera) and I still havent been able to contact him. It is also impossible to get any pictures taken around here because Navy collected our cameras and are holding all of them someplace for us until we pull out of here.

Nothing exciting has happened around here except a bomb exploding and my finding a caterpillar in my beans this noon during chow. The boys around me turned green and refused to eat any more beans and were slight agag when I finished mine off. I must say that it had more meat on it than the pork chop that was lying on my plate – pardon me, tray. That atom in my estimation was a fizzle. I heard more noise and shooting in that wild west picture they showed the same night. It was really a beautiful sight to see though, especially the enormous cloud after the explosion. It looked like a giant dish of peach ice-cream (the cloud of smoke) sitting on the horizon. (And speaking of ice-cream I shure wish I had some of it out here now. There seems to be aan acute shortage of it out here). There was a lot of light generated by that darn thing too. They made us stand facing the other way and bury our eyes in the back of our arms but you can still see the light. So now we are back in the lagoon again making preparations for the next big? Bang. The water around here is still radio-active so they say there won’t be any swimming until it clears up. Also a message came through to the effect that there will be no fishing.

Success of this hypothetical depends on the objectives, I'm not sure about a march on Moscow, but maybe kick them out of Poland/Ukraine/Eastern Europe?

The Russian logistical system was a nightmare. We sent them over 75,000 trucks during the war (among a lot of other things). As soon as we cut them off, they'd have a heck of a time supplying their units in the field. Add in American airpower and they would have had a rough go of it.

Of course, this is all predicated on American willpower to see it through. Taking political/social factors out and relying just strictly on "Xs and Os", as it were, the US in '45-'46 absolutely crushes the USSR.

We wouldn't have unless we used nukes. There were way too many of them.
