If the Wage Gap Exists, Why Do Companies Hire Men?

So, bullshite studies have been intentionally misinterpreted to say women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes.
I don't believe this is anywhere close to accurate, but for the sake of argument, let's say it is.
Why would a company ever hire a man? It seems stupid, right? After all, women are obviously much more intelligent than men (sitcoms told me so) and they are less inclined to set things on fire or make a complete as of themselves at networking functions. They are also great multitaskers.
So, if you can get an obviously superior worker for 23% less, why wouldn't you?
White men! Black Men! Brown Men! Yellow Men! Stop worrying about encroachment from foreign shores. The enemy is within. When they figure this out, we are all out of a job.

This all comes from a conversation I had tonight with one of my friends in Colorado. She owns a very successful, large scale organic farm. She's also the crunchiest of hippies. She brought up the wage gap and nattered on for a while before I interrupted her and asked, "So does that mean you're going to hire women instead of Mexicans for the harvest."

Good question. One must assume that companies just want to pay extra and cut into their gross margin just to keep the woman down.

It is not. The 77 cents argument depends on ignoring the number of hours per week you work, your profession, your college major, and your length of work history with your employer. There may now be a wage gap developing between childless women that actually swings in the favor of women (they are allegedly making $1.08 for every $1.00 of their same age 35-43 year old counterparts).
Of course this might just be a reflection of the comparative excellence of younger women compared to men as well tho - as women are now graduating from high school, college, and graduate schools at higher rates than men - who are more likely to end up in jail or homeless.
