It's more about the parents than the schools. The best elementary and middle schools in Ouachita Parish are public. That's coming straight from the Principal of the top private school in the area. High School is a bit different, but that's still more about parenting.

Seems like it's just a belief in South LA that you must go private for a good education. IDK if that's true, or just a sentiment of the locals.

People won’t do that until the public schools stop being so horrible.

I'm not willing to test the waters with my 11 year old daughter and we are zoned for Tara which has like a 48% graduation rate

We'll just suck it up for 7 more years

The state educational system would go broke. All the private school parents are paying educational taxes with no return on tax dollars. If their kids went to public school the state has to pay to educate these kids they had been getting a free financial pass on.

The public school system averages would be better. The troublemakers would still be there.

Is that the actual percentage? Wow, if true. It was a decent school in the 1970's and early 80's.
Glad my kid goes to a private school. No way we would have put him in a regular public school.
He was accepted to go to BRHS, and that would have probably been fine, but he wanted to go somewhere else. Luckily we were able to get him where he wanted to be. We think it's been worth it.

I'm being serious. Do new neighborhoods not build in new elementaries if its calculated overcrowding will occur to the nearest/neighboring k-4/5?

It would be better no doubt. Public schools that have good advanced/honors/AP classes seem fine, it segregates the smart kids from the riff raff. Having the private school kids would would mean more in those classes.

Having a kid in private school in BR and having significant experience with the BR public "STEM" programs, I would never consider send my kids through the BR public programs, notwithstanding BRHS.

Is there that much bussing in BR? You can get a good education at Barbe, but the “magnet school” is Washington-Marion.

It's a terrible school now unfortunately. My mom is a Tara alum but it's the same with all of the BR non magnet public schools. They've all been destroyed. We just started my daughter in a private school in pre K and she's going into the 6th grade in August.

Let's be honest. Many people who send their kids to private school do so because they don't want their kids to go to school with black kids.

There are private schools that have the funding to provide the resources and education that are better than public schools. The majority of the students come from upper middle class to upper class families.

Then there are a lot of private schools that are mostly middle class families who either want their kid to learn the religion of whatever type of school it is or prefer to not send their kids to school with black kids. And these private schools do not have the same resources public schools do.

In an ideal world, there would be a complete reform in education, throughout the country. Instead of having charter schools popping up or all these other type of institutions, each state should evaluate each parish. Try to reduce the number of hight schools, as much as possible and each HS would have a magnet school program.

For example, in EBRP the public high schools in the parish are:
Broadmoor
Tara
Woodlawn
McKinley
Capital
Belaire
Glen Oaks
Scotlandville
Central
Baker
Zachary

That's 11, am I missing a few? I know Zachary is it's own school district, but let's assume it's not.

Broadmoor, Tara and Belaire could merge together.. Glen Oaks, Capital and Scotlandville can merge.. I am just throwing schools together, but I am sure everyone is getting the point. If you merge three schools into one and then have a magnet schools at each one, a lot of parents who send their kids to private school would likely send their kid to the magnet school. Then you can take the best resources from the schools that merge together (teachers, administrators, etc) and I think that would do a lot to improve the education system.

better question, what if 75% of public school kids moved in with those private school families - how would they turn out? It’s more about home life rather than school life. POS parents usually raise POS kids.

There are no private schools that do not have black children. Be it vouchers or ACE scholarships. Or *gasp* paying black families. Private school parents aren’t paying big bucks for race attendance. We are paying for acedemics and administration/teachers who are invested-also the company of families who feel the same.

I get it. But It definitely ends up that way.

Is that our fault? No. It is what it is.

It would improve the public school system of Louisiana overall...

However, you aren’t going to find too many that are willing to fall on that sword for a couple generations in order to get the Louisiana school system on par with the rest of the country. The standards for private schools should have been a lot stricter from the jump. Nowadays you have a private catholic school in every Louisiana town.

Does the LA system basically stop at the Principal level, and they report to the State? No Superintendents or Regional offices?
