re: If, say, 75% of people who send their kids to private school, sent them to public schools

I don't think it's to completely avoid minority kids, but it's definitely to avoid a 50/50 split that say a public magnet program would have.
I'm having these exact discussions right now with my wife. She grew up in River Ridge, went to Catholic schools. I grew up in BR, went through the Magnet program and BRHS. She's fully aware that the magnet program can be just as good or even better than most private schools (especially before highschool, where it's really just BRHS or private as an option), but it's the whole atmosphere is so different than what she grew up with, she's hesitant.
My wife doesn't have a hateful bone in her body, but she literally has no idea what it's like to go to school that's a 50/50 racial makeup. It's natural for people to gravitate to what they're used to /comfortable with. I don't blame or shame people for thinking that way, but to say that it's "only about academics" is just not true. Most people, regardless of income or ability, won't take their personal research of a school's educational quality past talking to friends who's kids go somewhere and "love it".

I 100% understand why no individual family would make that decision, but if you could guarantee all of the private school families would go, you could pull it off.
There are plenty of parishes in LA where the private schools are essentially nil, and, lo and behold, the public schools rank at the top of the state. Lake Charles is a good example. Hell, even something like St Mary Parish has good scores, and only two small catholic schools.
Meanwhile, New Orleans sends more kids to private schools (25%) than any metro area in the country. Baton Rouge is 4th. That's incredible. I genuinely think it's a chicken v egg scenario, and I can see both sides of the argument.

This is East Baton Rouge. You line the right pockets and you can build your 400 unit subdivision wherever you like, zoning road capacity/access to other parts of the parish, drainage, and infrastructure concerns be damned.
It's cute you think we have neighborhood schools. Thanks to a jackass federal judge, that new subdivision is getting shipped all over the parish to whatever shitty school has room to sardine them in while they do nothing to eliminate the discipline problems while completely failing to teach your kid.
No offense meant and I apologize if you thought I was being trite.

None taken. I'm being completely serious, but I'm a sarcastic son of a bitch. This parish is doomed.

Public couldn’t handle the extra kids
They wouldn't have the money or facilities to accommodate. EBPSS is constantly complaining that they don't have enough money as it is despite the fact that many people in SBR always pay for, yet never use, the public schools.

Most people send their kid(s) to private school to avoid poor people and minorities. Not a judgement, just an observation.

What if the people who sent their kids to private school got a tax cut since they're not using the public education system resources?
We get a small tax break but it doesn't amount to much. You can write off some of the tuition on your state taxes. i think it's up to 5k but I'm not 100% sure on that.

It's not really just for the fact that they're poor or minorities. It's the fact that they have parents who don't care so the kids don't care. When the majority of the school day is spent dealing with distractions from undisciplined children, then everyone suffers. Now that there's a movement not to punish kids based on skin color, the problem will only get worse.

Not “minorities” . Specifically black people. Just say it. Nobody is trying to avoid the few Hispanics and Asians in BR. Not a judgment- just a statement.

The demographics of minors receiving care for stab wounds at Louisiana hospitals and urgent care centers would be skewed more to the upper-middle class white demo.

There isnt anything wrong with public schools for the kids that have parents that care and are involved in their schools activities.

quote:I went to public school in EBR parish K - 12. I'm white. I had plenty of black teachers and black school mates. I was bussed across town. I got a good education because I was on a college-bound path, was graced with intelligence, and had internal drive to excel. My children have dated black people (who were major upgrades to prior white love interests). I would never send my kids to public school in EBR parish if I could afford to send them elsewhere.

You are completely judging people instead of the situation. The socio-economic / demographics are what they are -- and there are good reasons that they are what they are. As people have pointed out, parents are a large factor for why kids and schools perform poorly. If the black (or any other) community has a problem with single parent families, then the black (or any other) community should maybe right their own house. Having said that, you should not expect any other family of any race to purposefully put their children in a situation which is detrimental to their children's success. So, I'm judging the black community -- and it's also an observation. They should own it and do something about it -- and there's not one white person here who can solve that problem for them.

I'm judging people ? No I'm actually just saying when people unartfully say "minorities" in regard to EBRPSS they are referring to black kids. So just say black. I'm just arguing against dishonest weasel words, that's all. Just speak like a man who values honesty and use the English language honestly. That was my point.

quote:Your push to ensure one race is singled out certainly makes it appear that you want this to be race-related. You really just wanted to make sure one race was pointed out? I'm pretty sure everyone in Baton Rouge realizes that the largest "minority" is black (since they're over 55% of the population). My advice would be to not be disingenuous or to find another point to make which adds to the conversation.
So just say black.

It's not all black kids. My daughter's private school is about 5-10% black and those kids are just as nice and well behaved as any other kids. It's the ghetto types that we pay to avoid. Sad but true.

Black people aren’t minorities in Baton Rouge so he couldn’t have been talking about them
