I could see Putin invading the former Russian satellites and stopping there. Europe doesn't want war and we won't want war so he could get away with it. As long as he doesn't get greedy and stops before he hits a border we actually care about.

The result would be, however, that those European countries will have realized they are sitting ducks and may finally put some resources into building up their own defenses.

No because Obama would just keep moving the red line back. You can't lose a war if you don't fight a war! (sarcasm)

I call bullshite on this one. I'm sure you've read Red Storm Rising, Darth. I don't believe Russia could establish Air Superiority in Europe. And without Air Superiority,

Red Storm Rising.
Beat me to it, was it mentioned in the previous 8 pages?

I wonder if anyone has the wherewithal to update that novel?

In the initial stages of the war, the Russians most likely would establish air superiority over the Baltics. It's not a matter of them having better fighters. It's a matter of the current balance of forces in that area. We'd have to move air assets and take out their SAMs before we could get it back.

And yes, I've read Red Storm Rising. Great book.

That Army and Air Force - hell, that nation doesn't exist anymore in any recognizable form.

I read that book before I joined the U.S. military. The decline has been sincere during my time in uniform. Some days, I think it might be my fault.

And one more thing about your post. The A-10 is a damn fine bird. But it's EXTREMELY vulnerable to SAM's and even older Russian fighters. It's a ground attack aircraft and not designed for air to air combat. It would not be able to be effective over an European battlefield until NATO had both established air superiority and taken out the Russian's SAM network.

Remember the German Stukas? It's the modern day equivalent of it. Great at ground attack and brutally effective at killing tanks. But at the same time a sitting duck.

You should change thread title to:

If Russia threatened War in the Baltics, oil would go up temporarily.

Arguable. But even with F-15s, we still have an advantage over most if not all of Russia's best in air to air combat. I'm sure those Eagle drivers could hold their own until the cavalry showed up.

As for SAMs, our UAV and Stealth capabilities are still the best in the world. B-2's can deliver ordnance anywhere in the world within 24hrs, right?

The real kicker, much like in RSR, will be securing the North Atlantic. If the US & Royal Navies can seal off the GIUK gap, then the war is over.

I prefaced my post with "Without Russian Air Superiority".

To have any chance, Russia would have to;
- Establish air superiority immediately over the battlefield
- Deploy Air Defense forward to assist in securing AS against the inevitable US counter attack with more advanced assets.

I have no doubt they'd bloody the Russian's nose. But the Russians also have some very good modern fighters as well. And as i said above, the difference in a war in the Baltic is the current balance of forces in that area, where it would count. That's why I said they'd probably gain air superiority in the initial stages. Once we've redeployed forces and taken out their SAM network, the tide would turn.

This is how we'd eventually take out their SAM network. The problem is they've got a ton of them and it will not be easy or quick to take them down. It would not be like what we've seen in places like Iraq where in a matter of hours the enemy was left defenseless. It's going to take time and there will be losses.

I have no doubt between ourselves and the British we can secure the Atlantic. But here's the issue. If this Baltic War ever did come to pass, we'd have to redeploy to Europe at least two, if not three full corps from the US to Europe. That's going to take weeks or even months. What happens in the meantime? How far do the Russians get? How many European powers sue for peace knowing the Russians are days away while our forces at weeks or months away? There's an old saying from Confederate General N.B. Forrest about the difference in battle being "whoever gets there the firstest with the mostest". That would be our biggest problem in a European war as things stand today. Yes our army and air force are still better than the Russians. But that won't matter if we can't get them there in time.

Hell I've never served and you're much more qualified to make that call, especially being an armor guy.

Completely talking out of my arse here, but don't the Marines have QRF's stationed in like Deigo Garcia that can put boots on the ground within a week? Surely the capability exists for us to mobilize advance forces quickly. And the Air Force/Navy could get there faster. Really that's what will slow the advance fastest. Whoever rules the skies will rule the battlefield.

This was the Russian strategy in RSR.

Damn that's a good book. I miss those type of Clancy novels.

Like the entire world came down on them for annexing Crimea or like the entire world came down on them for sending troops into Eastern Ukraine?
