Yes the A-10 is tough as nails. But it is still very vulnerable to AAA, SAM's, and even older dedicated fighter aircraft.
See these things...
They can (and have) shot down A-10's.
ETA: FYI, all these things are Russian technology from the 60's to the early 80's. They've got a ton of stuff a whole lot more modern. This is probably their best...
Depending on the variant, it has a range of as short as 25 miles or as long as 250 miles. It travels at seeps of up to mach 6.2 and can reach targets up to 98,000 feet.

The problem isn't so much the 1950s era Soviet AA guns. It's the missiles, baw. A-10s are marvelous attack planes and are robust and survivable craft, but they're no match for even modest surface to air missile capabilities. That would all have to be cleared first with very specialized units and missions.
And it would take time. Time that Europe doesn't have. America is a big country and it warps our perspective of how things are. It's only about 2100 or 2200 miles from Paris to Moscow. That's about the same distance as Chicago to San Francisco.
And the Russians can just drive their tanks there. We would have to move them, primarily, by ship. And that takes weeks.
Exactly.

BTW. Just saw this linked on Drudge....

If Russia has peaceful intentions towards Europe why are they
(1) building up their military so much, especially when Europe is all but defenseless?
(2) Why are they conducting massive military exercises where they rehearse attacks against countries in Europe who obviously pose no threat to them?

Russia 'simulated a nuclear strike' against Sweden, Nato admits
Russian bombers targeted military and intelligence installations in 2013 war game that caught Swedish airforce unprepared

The Russian airforce conducted a mock nuclear strike against Sweden during war games less than three years ago, Nato has said.
The 2013 exercise, which saw a contingent of Russian aircraft approach Swedish airspace after crossing the Gulf of Finland, was one of several examples of dummy nuclear attacks against Nato and its allies in recent years, according to a new Nato report.
"As part of its overall military build-up, the pace of Russia’s military manoeuvres and drills have reached levels unseen since the height of the Cold War,”Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of Nato, wrote in his annual report for 2015.
“Over the past three years, Russia has conducted at least 18 large-scale snap exercises, some of which have involved more than 100,000 troops.”
"These exercises include simulated nuclear attacks on Nato Allies (eg, ZAPAD [a large-scale Russian military exercise]) and on partners (eg, March 2013 simulated attacks on Sweden),” he added.

Darth, what is your affiliation to the military, were you ever in the service?
Not a flame, serious question

If Russia decides to penetrate Turkey, it will be from the rear and they will not use Greece.

Served active duty army and later army national guard. Was a tanker most of my time but spent the last two years as field artillery. In addition to that I've spent my whole life studying military history and keeping up with what's going on in the world.

This is ridiculous. Russia has much more to fear from China than they do Europe or the Middle East.
A better question would be how would Russia handle a Chinese acquisition of territory?

From a military standpoint, you're correct. China's military is far and away more potent that all of Europe's combined. But from the looks of Russian deployment of forces and the training they've been doing for the past several years now, it looks like Russia has it's eyes fixed firmly on Europe. Part of this is probably due to the fact Russia and China have quite good relations. And you can also add in the fact China seems to have it's eyes towards expansion towards the Pacific and not towards Russia.

Because they know Russia is not a soft target. The Chinese are many things, but they are not idiots. That manmade island/airstrip that they have in the South China Sea has become a real game-changer in that region.

Maybe Russia knows that Eastern Europe is ripe for the picking. Our force levels are low. And given our current foreign policy, would we do anything about it? Perhaps Crimea was a "dry run" so to speak, see what the US and allies would do.
Do you think the US in its current political climate has the balls to declare WWIII on a Russian invasion of Europe?

Indeed at has. And could lead to a war in that area. It's not a situation to take lightly.

Well considering Europe poses no real threat but the Russians are building up their armed forces and training for war against Europe, this seems like a logical conclusion.

To be honest, no. And even if we did, it would take weeks if not months for us to be in a position to do anything about it.

I'm not sure America has the balls to defend against an invasion of the East Coast, much less Europe.

Far as I'm concerned they can have everything north of the Mason-Dixon.

Damn that's a good book. I miss those type of Clancy novels.
Bear and dragon was more interesting.
But, if we are talking aircraft, why is no one mentioning the eurofighter?
