It's a rite of passage. It's also a weeding out process. It theoretically makes you value membership more because you worked for it.

I'll venture the comprehensive answer...

It's interesting that you phrase it like that..."what is the appeal of hazing?"

Really, there's not supposed to be any appeal, but therein lies the problem with how some organizations mishandle it.

Hazing is not supposed to be about degradation or entertainment for active brothers. It's about rapidly forming a strong bond between what are essentially groups of complete strangers.

It is literally the same dynamic which bonds football teammates who go through two-a-days together in the summer heat or (to use a more extreme example) soldiers who go to war together. Going through shared struggles builds bonds of trust that wouldn't otherwise form. It's why - towards the end of Band of Brothers - the Easy Company veterans acted like assholes to the new reinforcements who hadn't been through Normandy and Bastogne. Because they hadn't been through the same shite they went through. It's a basic human in-group/out-group dynamic. In-groups are naturally distrusting of outsiders who haven't "proven themselves" yet. That's why the concept of a "rite of passage" is so universal in many different cultures.

Pledgeship is supposed to be a very controlled and critical process, which is why the pledge trainer is oftentimes considered a more important role than the actual president of the chapter. It is not something to be abused or taken lightly.

Nowadays, you see a lot of immaturity and lack of leadership in these organizations which is why I think most of the problems and tragedies we see occur. Lots of fraternity guys basically think pledgeship means that they have carte blanche to treat other human beings like shite for their own entertainment.

I was lucky to have been a part of a good organization with great leadership. At our first pledge meeting, we were told the three ground rules of pledgeship: 1) pledges will not be hit, 2) pledges will not have to get naked, and 3) pledges will not be forced to drink alcohol. And they meant it. Any brother who even flirted with the idea of breaking those rules or otherwise mistreating pledges had the hammer dropped on them.

And those three rules pretty much cover about 99% of the problematic issues we see with fraternities today.

They are doing this already. I was Greek at LSU in the mid 00s. We were already severely restricted vs our predecessors. The last 10 years have really exacerbated the situation. My fraternity got kicked off two years ago. The writing is on the wall. If fraternities exist in 10 years at LSU it will be in a limited capacity that is far different than traditional Greek life.

Not just LSU. The culture we live in now dictates that the stuff fraternities did in the past will no longer be accepted or tolerated. So if a dude wants to join a real fraternity, he should join the Marines.

Well I think the state of Louisiana will be the first ones to shutdown greek organizations at universities. There has been a lot happening at colleges in Louisiana this past year, where fraternities are getting in trouble.

For example, here at ULM, the two best frats on campus (which isn’t saying much because we only have four) have been suspended. One is pending investigation (but it doesn’t look good), and the other may get back on campus. The other two fraternities aren’t good fraternities so I could see ULM just shutting down greek life all together. It isn’t good to be apart of greek life in Louisiana right now
