If Delta Force is so much better than Seal Team Six, why didn't they go after Bin Laden?

Can anyone link to me any article / story on how we decided to go with Seal Team Six and not Delta Force for Operation Neptune Spear if the latter is so much better by all accounts?

Because Delta Force retired from Chuck Norris.

Didn’t need to break out the big guns for a goat fricker running for his life.

Seal Team Six
Seems like they vanished from the public consciousness

Now you’re asking the real questions.

Operation Neptune Spear
Because Neptune is the god of the sea, ipso facto…Seals are at his command.

It was ST6 area of operations and the JSOC commander was a SEAL

The top dogs weren’t needed to get someone they could get at any time…

100% this!
No way in hell McRaven was gonna give anybody else a chance!

Because Seals are basically the military SWAT team.
Delta Force plays a different role.

Did you get the special forces ranking from some attention whore on a podcast?
Posted on 5/21/25 at 11:16 pm to Barbenheimer
As others have said area of operations.
Also delta force and seal team six are equivalent from my understanding. Delta force is better than seals as a whole but seal team six is top 10% of an already small amount of badass dudes.
Delta just doesn’t have all the other teams like seals.
Some rough numbers I’ve come across before.
Active duty seals at any point in time ~2500. ~250 in seal team six.
Delta force ~250 members.

I know more about our humble delta force than any of you numbnuts. They are the best, hands down. Quiet, stoic, fierce.

They didn’t, it’s just not their mission set.
Green berets mission is to actually be behind enemy lines a teaches a resistant force how to fight unconventional warfare (I.e. insurgents).
Delta is more so a rescue operation team as in the Philippines and Iran but also do hunt/kill missions.
ST6 is more of a strike force, which is what that mission was.
However if memory serves ST6 was chosen due to operational reasons having already rotated back and on rest/training cycle while CAG was operational somewhere else in the world.

You may think he was just a goat fricker running for his life, but OBL’s impact on the States continues to this day. WE’ve never been more divided and the cracks in the foundation began after 9/11. The last time we had a surplus/balanced budget was 2001, 9/11 led to political hatred we are now in due to the proliferation of 24-hour cable news that exploded as a result of 9/11 (admittedly social media plays a big a role and was not directly related to 9/11), and poor decisions based on personal vendettas rather than the country's best interest all happened as a direct result of 9/11.
To the original point of the OP, the CIA’s SAD (formerly SAC) is probably the most elite unit. Any JSOC unit (DEVGRU/Seal Team Six, Delta and the 24th STS), is elite and could have done the job. As others have suggested, politics played a role in Seal 6 getting the call.

“Delta is more so a rescue operation team”. Shut up. You don’t know what you’re talking about.
