You should check out Out of Spec on YouTube and their main website. It's EV dedicated and they do all sorts of range tests, charging tests, and go over what all is good and shite on pretty much every EV available in the US.

Makes no sense
Most of the cost of insurance is liability.

My only EV experience is with Tesla but I’ll take a stab:
Absolutely not.
It sounds like your patterns fit pretty nicely for an EV assuming you can charge at home. Not saying you can’t rely solely on outside charging but the hassle will almost definitely negate the benefit IMO.
The $7500 federal credit is still in place for now but if you’re looking a year out, tbd. My gut tells me it’ll be gone soon.
Plenty of Teslas have gone well over 200K. Tesla says their batteries will go for 1500 charge cycles before they hit 70% of their original capacity…even if you get half that, a car with an EPA rating of 300 miles will get more than 200K miles.
And again, that’s before hitting 70% of original capacity (not before dying).
Unsure about this one.
From a Tesla perspective, expect them to go up. Nothing crazy but they will go up. This is due to how expensive their parts have been historically (although I think that’s changing) so maybe not true for other EVs.
Keep doing that. I’ve been a Model 3 owner for five years now and the landscape is always changing, get all the info you can before you make a decision and good luck!

How long do the batteries really last before replacement is required?

want self driving, not necessarily EV. The true full self driving vehicles like FSD enabled Teslas are incredible, and much safer than your average driver
This is gonna be the real game changer here. It drives better than 95% of the drivers out there. Pretty awesome.

1) how long will you drive it
2) $2-$3k to install charging station at house (believe there are some rebates/sell incentives to save if cost)

Why would a hybrid equate to more actuarial risk
It doesn’t equate to more actual risk, but it equates to more financial risk, because the vehicle is worth quite a bit more.

Me and the wife are looking at Teslas for our next family ride. The one with the rear gullwing doors.

Tesla FSD went from something that I would never use last spring (version 11) to something I paid outright for in November (version 12). The improvements have been even bigger with 13.
It has to get cheaper though. I love it but I can’t in good conscience recommend anyone pay $8K for it even now.

This depends. Installing a 240V dryer outlet is more than enough and can be as low as a few hundred.
We paid $1300 for two but our electrician also had to run conduit from our box to where we wanted them surface mounted.

I don't have it, just ride along as a passenger in one. It's nice, but I wouldn't pay for it now. It seems so crazy strict right now on the drivers that I might as well drive myself lol because I'd rack up strikes quickly. Once things get further along and the NTSB lightens up sign me up.

I am guessing cost to repair.
I'm guessing the poster's mom had the collision portion of her insurance go way up because the value of the car is higher.

Daughter in law went hybrid. Insurance went down.

Get a hybrid instead. It uses both and gets you extended miles
A rechargeable hybrid, maybe. But I think the OP should just get a used EV - they can’t sell them for much. When the battery goes just junk it. It is super convenient, as long as you don’t have to recharge on the road. It is also way more reliable, way cheaper to operate, and way better performing.
I’m in the same situation. My wife has a big SUV for ferrying children, so I got an EV. I’ve had it for a year, and it feels like I stopped getting hit with a hammer. I never stop for gas, change oil, and it never needs maintenance.
And if you get a used EV you can probably save yourself from one of the two big negatives - the price. The other being the recharge time and range.

My stepson got a rivian last year. They’re pretty cool if they fit your needs. He kinda looks like he likes dick in his arse driving it, but it works for him and his family. The amount of power it has is pretty wild. They just look so gay.

Yeah it’s very strict with the “pay attention” thing. I don’t have any strikes (you have to basically ignore several warnings before that happens) but I get warned occasionally for glancing away too often. It also doesn’t trust you when you’re wearing sunglasses.

$20K for batteries at 8 years. Plan ahead.
For a car that’s worth about $10k.
You might as well buy a f*cking Chrysler product.

I was thinking about it today. I wonder if there is an algorithm built in where certain people are getting strikes quicker. Like you have none, so maybe it's being more lenient on you now.
Where as people who get them more it's like hey shite head you can't glance away or wear your glasses for 0.0006 seconds. So it's harsher on them going forward.

You get any EV other than a Tesla and you’re an idiot. The more affordable one is coming this year if you can hold off if that’s a concern. Also unsupervised full self driving is coming soon and you’re gonna want that.
