Funny how many on here talk tough and criticize (sometimes with reason) our justice system but don’t want to participate when they’re asked to step up

federal jury duty in New Orleans
How far away do you live?

Last time I had jury duty I told them I moved out of the parish and that was that.
I hadn't actually moved yet, but I was moving in two months.

I was recently called for the grand jury pool in Orleans criminal district court. Because of my number, I was made an alternate and was never called in over the 6 month term
From a work prospective, it would have been a disaster, as it required 2 half day meetings per week. However, from a curiosity standpoint I was kind of disappointed. Would have been interesting. One aspect that was explained in orientation, was that grand jurors have some oversight of the jail and could request an inspection at any time during their term. If seated, I would have exercised my authority just to see that shitshow.
About 10 years ago, I was seated in Orleans on a jury for a drug possession case. One of the other jurors was the son of a high profile personal injury attorney. He was an attorney as well, although not actively practicing law. Both the prosecutor and defense attorney knew his dad, but he was still seated. Case ended in a hung jury. One of the big takeaways is that lunch is a big deal in court. Bailiff was very proud that we could order from Zeas. Said we were lucky because trial/deliberations were essentially a day and and a half, we got two lunches. Bailiff and judge got free lunch as well, so I guess that was part of it.

Honest question—is there any reason to fear retribution when serving on a jury? Do defendants/their allies have a chance of identifying jury members? This is always in the back of my mind when I am contemplating whether or not I’d be eager to serve on a jury.
Did any Al Capone or John Gotti jurors who convicted them to prison ever get killed by mobsters looking for retaliation????
NO.

There's the alternative for the fat black gal that's suing Lyft. All she needs is a couple Asian guys with a big pushcart to get her fat arse around town.

Have your employer write you a letter indicating the importance of your current role in the national security. You will then be granted an extension opportunity to be a juror later. Otherwise health of you or your role as a vital caregiver for your family.

Then do the footwork and look it up. I'm sure that info is on the net somewhere.

Tell them you identify as a woman, then throw rocks at them.

You can tell them that you have been exposed to Covid.

This is exactly the reason I am avoiding this. fricking snow already ruined my last half of this month. Then I have to start February with this shite. It’s not conducive for work at all.

My son was summoned for federal grand jury duty. He's a type 1 diabetic and even with doctors excuse they wouldn't dismiss him. He's 22 and was the youngest there, he got picked as an alternate.

Well if it’s that big of a deal I can shoot you in the leg or burn your house down for a price.
Just trying to help. Let me know.

Many years ago I went before a district court judge and told him I was a journalist and worked for a local newspaper.
He said, rather sternly, “ good, this is a murder trial and I need smart people. Now go sit down.”
Only thing that got me out of it was they chose a full jury before they called me back up.
