Seriously. I think we take our k to 12 educators for granted. It's a job that I certainly would not want,

but I know how necessary it is. I think the main reason it gets a bad rap is due to discipline problems with kids and the overall laziness/ incompetence of some faculty.

In truth, all jobs have bad workers and other difficulties.

The reason so many teachers don't care about teaching is because they have no support from administrators and the little shits that go home and cry to mommy and daddy because they made a bad grade get their way.

If parents want better teachers then they should learn to teach their kids how to behave in a classroom and give administration the right to discipline them.

This. My wife retired after 29 years this past summer, and it the best decision she made. When I was a kid my parents told me that I was to respect the teacher, and that if I misbehaved, it would be my butt.

Fast forward to today and parents don't respect the teacher's authority and their kids don't either. It's the teachers fault is their default.
And administration has made it worse, but taking the parents side over the teachers for fear of an upset parent.

You don't know the social studies faculty, including myself, where I teach.

Louisiana needs to do several things to raise the bar:
- pay teachers better to attract a higher quality teacher
- make teachers above 2nd grade actually have a degree in what they teach. Hold teachers to a higher standard, if I want to teach science I need a degree in a science field while education becomes a minor.
- have the same standards across the state, comparing two different parish's that are teaching different ways is not a fair was to assess things.
- give teachers/administration the resources they need to provide a quality education
- quit changing the curriculum every 2-3 years, stay consistent

Just my opinion though

I agree, but that's not happening anytime soon. School systems are having problems just getting warm bodies in teaching positions in a lot of cases. Add to that the fact that the number of people going into education is declining steadily, and you have ANOTHER serious problem.

That goes into the pay, if the starting salary was closer to 40-45k instead of 25-30k (in some areas) you would have more people entering the field. Tell a person they could be making 50-60k with a degree and only working 9 months is appealing.

I've seen teachers come in and if they don't have a guide book in front of them they have no idea what they are teaching. It is a shame as they would be lost without the book and information in the book.

Wait, they don't already make them have a degree in what they teach? Georgia won't let you teach it unless you do. Now, you can have a degree in history but teach math if you are already certified in history but can pass the math GACE.

We're all moderate to conservative, and pushing the agenda that you spoke of would be deplorable to any of us.
