We should all take your philosophy one step further. Honorifics are for cucks. From now on, I’m calling my doctor by his first name and if he objects, I’m going to insist my name be preceded by “manager”.

Simple, a PhD is a doctor. Should be used in any professional setting if you are not a doctor to call the person a doctor. Ultimately it comes down the the individual. I tell all my colleagues degrees or not they do not need to call me Dr. Some still do because it makes them more comfortable. I work with janitors to PHDs on a regular bases and they all call me by my first name. I have colleagues that insist on being called Dr. So and So by their fellow employees. I really think they are over doing it. But when one those jerks call me by my first name, I remind them that I am Dr. So and So. :-) it is kinda fun to piss them off.

Any student that does not call me Doctor that is cool as long as they call me Professor. Any student that calls me by my first name can get the F out of my class. I have told more than one that the proper address is Dr. or Professor or to stay quiet. That is just disrespectful and degrades the authority of the teacher.

For me personally I could careless if anyone calls me Dr. My PhD was more about setting a high goal and completing it.

i am inside this group, but i wouldn't want to be called Dr.

IMO, anyone who insists upon being labeled or addressed as Dr. is pretentious as frick, and needs to get the frick over themselves....

My engineering degrees are fine with that. My bro in law has his doctorate in engineering, we joke about it with him. Anyone who takes that shite seriously with people using it when referring to them outside of the medical field has screws loose. Teachers/professors are probably the worst about it, frick em.

That's because STEM ppl are usually very modest.

But, every online "doctorate" in education be will correct the F outta anyone they encounter.

I had a man call the company I work for basically begging to do business with us. The problem is, is that the job site is completely out of our territory. While trying to explain to him that we don’t go that far and try to explain it to this dumb arse that he can get it cheaper locally. He stops me mid sentence and said that he prefers to be called “Dr.”!!! I was blown away! I had never met or talked to this guy a day in my life. I googled his name after. He was a professor at SUNO and had TERRIBLE reviews on rate my professor. LOL

The internet badass has entered the thread.

To hell with respecting accomplished individuals and societal norms. I've got strangers to not impress in the slightest.

There are valid reasons for titles. There are many levels of providers in hospitals, and it is very important to know the level of the person you are conversing with. Also, even though the model of paternalistic medicine is outdated, physicians are still your educator because (believe it or not) they know much more than you do, and referring to them as doctor establishes that you understand that. Sure, that is true with all sorts of occupations, but something tells me that it's more critical when dealing with matters of life and death.

But, hey. What do I know? I feel stupid even having to explain this. Call your doctor by his first name because you think the only reason it's a thing is because it pleases them . So stupid.

There are plenty of ways to distinguish levels of professionals and respect each other for accomplishments besides putting a prefix on your name. Every other industry manages to do it somehow. It isn’t that important for saving lives in the grand scheme of things, but if it keeps them from screwing with me, I’ll do it.

In a limited subject you are specifically going to see them for, this just reeks of disrespect of the patients that will know a shite load more than the doctor in other subjects.

Lolz. The doctor isn't at the patient's office.

Yes, he would be a dick to go to his accountant's office looking for advice and not work with the person until referred to as doctor.

I've actually seen polls where patients find hospitals more confusing now that everyone wears white coats and everyone can be referred to as doctor. I can only imagine in a heart attack scenario.

"Are you a doctor?!"
Why yes I am.

"Start initiating chest compressions!"
Whoa whoa whoa. I'm a doctor of physical therapy.

It's not even worth explaining. Most of the population doesn't have to be spoon-fed why the title exists, and most are happy to use the term doctor because they don't overthink it and don't have an inferiority complex that makes them feel like the doctor is insulting their intelligence by having a title.

Titles are nothing more than ego salve and the people who insist on them are as insecure as they come. I’m a PE and I can think of nothing more ridiculous than walking around introducing myself as ‘Engineer’ and expecting everyone to refer to me as such. I would be embarrassed to think so highly of myself.

Lol. Inferiority complex rears its ugly head like a juicy pimple on the arse.

I call my mom by her first name because I'm edgy, and I'm an adult now. Her title is an ego salve.

My wife is a Dr in a medical field and something I have always wondered is if I can call myself Mr. Dr. Smith.

Because when a husband is the Dr, the wife is Mrs Dr Smith.

Can I tote that title?

Please OT, say yes.

Mr and Dr Smith

Had a patient today introduce themselves as Dr Smith. I never introduce myself as Dr Lithium in a social setting unless you're an a-hole.

You dont go to the doctor? You go see Jordan, ed, or some first name?
Seems disrespectful and rude.

There you prove why the prefix is meaningless except to build your ego. Dr at the front of a name tells you nothing about the person except how long they went to school and not what they specialized in. What matters is the job title and everyone has one of those and that does matter. A SRO isn’t going to want just a random person in a nuke plant to come up with a fuel calculation, they are gonna ask for the nuke engineers. Job titles do matter, it’s not necessary to need a prefix or even a suffix like MD or PE in my field when you can just say you need a licensed engineer in the field you require to stamp some drawings. A hospital is not going to run any worse if when someone says they need a doctor and the response is “John Doe is one” instead of “Dr Doe is one.”

Oh the humanity now everyone gets coats, what will it do to your ego since you don’t have a special white coat.

What kind of medical doctor in a hospital wouldn’t know chest compressions? Hell, I’m even trained to do them through my work. Sounds like y’all got bigger problems to worry about than if someone uses a prefix to refer to you.
