re: I predict many leaking roofs as this snow turns to ice tonight

I wouldn’t add water. I’m just saying this based on “experience” with frantically spraying water on my windshield trying to get the ice to melt — because every minute matters on school mornings/carpool.
adding water, for me at least, 7 times out of 10 results in more ice.
First I’ve heard of roof ice dams though. Guess I’ll have one of my sons get out on a ladder with a broom.

Well because of this I spent an hour raking my roof just now. Ice was in my valleys but i couldnt do much with it not being able to feel my hands despite gloves
While definitely a concern, you guys are spending way too much time on this with your avg 2000-3000 sq ft house. Take a broom, rake, or I just used my pole saw and clear out as much of the bottom 2 ft or so that you can.
I had ice dams forming but the pitch of my roof in every location would not have leaked into my house. The water leveled out at any of my dams would have just leaked into the eaves 6 inches back from the ice dam.
Long story, definitely try and clear it but it should take 10-20 mins at most for your avg house imo.

How does not having a single gutter on my home affect this? That’s good, right?

Helps. I spent a couple hours this morning removing about 3' of snow from the eaves. Dams where forming where the roof lines met. Took a rubber mallet and a screw driver and broke up the ice. Only really had 1 spot that when the ice was cracked, a bunch of water started to drain.
Thanks for the post Stout!

Right or wrong, I just did this per your advice and I appreciate the heads up. Warmed me up too.

No gutters and a very steep roof. I cleared off what I could but even if one formed it would just leak into the soffit vent and drip out.

My ignorant opinion is you should be fine. My problem came in a valley into a gutter.

Other than patios or valleys where you can get heavy washout you don’t need gutters in Louisiana.

I just put a temp plug in heat trace in my gutter on the side the sun doesn't hit well. It has worked great so far.

Thanks stout. My slope of my roof is very low. Finished doing what needs to be done.

Hey stout you cocksucker.
Just messing with you.
I busted my arse for an hour this morning raking snow off my house with a push broom.
Within a few hours it looked like this and I was so proud that I posted it to Facebook suggesting people do the same.
Then, within 5 minutes of posting that shite, two roofing contractors I know very well commented that my roof would be fine with that pitch and no gutters.
Ah well. I needed the exercise and a reason to get outside and move around. And I have peace of mind that I did what I could.

In 2021 several houses with your pitch and no gutters still had ice dams. I am telling you from experience. There is no guarantee other than to play it safe and do what you did.

My roof is steep R panel and I have some serious ice daming going on.

How steep. The leak potential should be fairly low compared to shingles but its not a 0% chance

I believe you. From the time you made this thread until 6am this morning I became an Ice Dam Expert Via Google 'research'.

I found that gutters don't matter at all and pitch matters but is no guarantee. preciate you.

never heard of this but, not surprised since we never have this much snow. Really enjoy doing this today as it was a beautiful day! Thank you for the info. I had a lot of ice dams going on as I have a 1958 ranch home with 2ft eaves and a roof that is only 4 years old. it took me a while as the main house is 3100sqft, 700sqft garage and a 400sqft guest house. It did get the water moving along on the parts that got sunshine but, part of the house didn't melt at all today.
