I need some truck buying help...looking to get a truck for my teenager

I am looking to buy a truck for my son to drive. He is currently 15 years old but will get his license soon. I am thinking of buying new so that it will hopefully last him through college. If I buy used then I fear that I will be buying another vehicle for him in 3-4 years. I would consider something 2-3 years old with less than 40K miles if the price is right but after looking online at used car prices I feel like I might as well buy new. I have been looking at Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Silverado, or Ford F-150. The only absolute must have options are crew cab (would consider extended cab), automatic transmission, AC. Any other sites besides Autotrader, Cars.com etc? Any specific dealerships or car lots that I should check out in or around BR?

He's going to wreck it at least once. Get him an old beater first

Get him an old beater you’re not saving money, and you’re not doing him any favors by getting him something new.

Do yourself a favor and do not buy your newly licensed to drive son a brand new vehicle. Trust me.
I would buy used and would go with a Silverado or Tundra.
ETA: And if possible go with crew cab. Extended cab gets to be a real pain in the arse.

This is going to sound crazy but don’t buy him a new truck. Just get him an old beater.

Used one of these and it may last long enough for him to bring home some of your grandkids in after he gets his college degree.

Do you know how much insurance is going to cost on a 16 year old boy with a brand new truck?
Hint: it is going to be higher than giraffe pussy on stilts.
ETA: 2 minute video about truck nuts

Well where do I find a beater? I can't find any used trucks with less than 100K miles for less than $18K. For that price I might as well buy him a new Colorado for $25K.

I bought a used truck 8 years ago. Still got it.

Sounds like you want to be his friend rather than his father.
Get an older truck like a 4cyl Toyota. Cost to buy, cost of ownership, cost for insurance, cost for maintenance - all way cheaper. Get one that needs a little work done on it, and he can work on it while he's still 15 and he can drive it when it's complete. Those skills and that exposure will pay dividends for him the rest of his life.
Get a regular cab. If you get him a crew cab he'll be parked off road every weekend and you'll be a grandpa sooner than you want to be.
Get a manual transmission. Everyone needs to learn how to drive a manual and if he has to shift gears, the less likely he is to text.

You know what, frick it, go ahead and get him that platinum f-250. He is going to need all that payload with all the girls he knocks up in it.

Found this one in 30 seconds. Pretty much all of the sites let you filter by year, mileage, price, etc.
Anyone remember the one that Jimmy Ott always talks about on 104.5? Can't remember the name

No way in hell should you get him a brand new truck at 15. Get him an Uncle Jesse Special.

You do not want to get him a new truck... I'll just leave it at that

You’d be nuts to get him a brand new vehicle

Others may have a better idea but....if you know a buddy that is a mechanic, pay him $500 to help you find a solid vehicle. Well worth the money. I wouldn't be worried about miles. A solid truck with a little TLC and preventive maintenance will last a long time, even if you buy it with over 100k. You can find excellent deals that are mechanically sound but need a little rehab on the interior or paint work - great stuff for him to do, as well as change all fluids, filters, belts, hoses, and so forth, on his own, to learn about the vehicle. I have diesel with 450k on it and it runs like a freight train and will pull a house. Vehicles will last a long time if taken care of.

Habe you not ever seen the douchy 16-year-old baws that hang their truck nuts on new trucks their parents bought them?
Don't make you kid a douche.
