Does not fricking matter. Insurance company is going to see a 16 year old driver and rate accordingly for it. Primary or not.

It matters a lot, I drove a company car when my kids started driving, just like the OP my agent told me to never buy a third car, it would be considered driven 100% of the time by a 16 year old, the difference in premium between that, and a 16 years old being a part time driver of a shared vehicle was enormous.

No, they are not.

LOL, that's why Mercedes still makes them and is developing more of them, right?

If you have multiple kids the best thing to do is to buy somewhat of a beater and let them all learn on that, and then get them something better upon HS graduation that will last through college and for 2-3 years after until they can afford something on their own.

Not only are trucks bigger, but a truck will allow them to do a lot more stupid shite in HS. I can attest to that myself.

An early 2000s Tacoma is a great first truck for a kid. Find a 2 door or extended cab so they aren't driving everyone around all the time.

I also think there is no issue buying a truck that may need repairs. Its life and a good lesson to teach kids. I worked on my first couple of cars a lot with my dad.

You do realize paddle shifters are not the same thing as a clutch and pedal, right? It's still an "automatic" transmission with a torque converter.

Liability only on my 18 year old son to drive a 2004 ford ranger is 360 a month on my policy. On his own would have been north of 450 a month.

My point exactly. They are still rating for the teenager regardless. Go price the insurance with just yourself. I bet its 100 bucks or less a month.

There is literally no way. I had full coverage on Mustang GT at 19 and didn't pay near that, and insurance rates are high as frick where I live.

Not the years of the 350s champ. I owned 3 of em.

OP needs to find a 96-99 (early part)

Those trucks had shite interiors. Pretty sure dashmats became a known product solely because of those dashes cracking,.

Show your kid you love him, and teach him the value of a dollar. He will thank you for it later when it matters. Buy him a new vehicle and he’ll never respect it or understand what it takes but he will come away with unrealistic expectations in life.

The only absolute must have options are crew cab

While I love my crew cab and will never own a truck without one, think about the implications of what that means for your son. He will be driving everyone everywhere. He'll be more likely to be the one that is buzzed and driving his buddies around

Agreed. I'm 31 and have never been at fault in an accident, and never had any collision on my vehicles other than a bump at a red light.

I wasn't allowed to drive until I was 17 though. Maybe that helped

Agreed. No one ever wanted to pile in the bench row can of my old 78 Bonanza.

Damn I miss that truck. So many memories.

Yep. I got speeding tickets, but never any at fault accidents. I started driving way before I had a learner's permit though, so I was very comfortable behind the wheel by the time I got my license and was out on my own. Also learned how to drive on an old stick shift Nissan hard body, which I think helped develop my focus.

It's just a dumb antiquated way of thinking that the only way to teach your kid to value nice things is to not buy them nice things. That's one approach - make them pay for nice stuff if they want nice stuff because they will value it more.

But you could also buy your kid a nice car and tell them that they have to take care of it because they aren't getting another one if they damage it. You do this to teach them to take care of nice things.

Take this guy for example:

quote:

Show your kid you love him, and teach him the value of a dollar. He will thank you for it later when it matters. Buy him a new vehicle and he’ll never respect it or understand what it takes but he will come away with unrealistic expectations in life.

Spoil the child and you’re only doing them a disservice.

My parents spoiled me. They also taught me that it takes hard work to be able to provide nice things for your family, so I took care of the nice things they got me and I've worked in some form or fashion since I was 13, got a good job, and take care of my stuff.

Acting like there's only one way to not raise an entitled little shite is just silly.

But seriously why a truck? Will he ever actually need it? If not he'll be buying a new car in a few years anyway.
